Boycott Microsoft Homepage Publicizes anticompetitive practices by the large software maker. Encourages consumers to try similar products from other companies instead of relying on Microsoft's brand name. This site has some interesting articles. A list of alternative products by Microsoft's competitors should be added soon.

Star Trek Lost Episode (joke)

Netscape Netcenter banner
Netscape NetCenter Includes several search engines, links arranged by categories, and downloadable files.

Netscape Communicator is really good. You can download version 4.5 for free from NetCenter. It includes a web browser, email/news reader, webpage editor and AOL Instant Messenger

Free QNX demo   This demo fits on a single 1.44 meg floppy.  It includes an operating system called QNX, a graphical interface called Photon, a web browser from Spyglass, and a puzzle game. (added 12/17/98)

The full version of QNX is now free for non-commercial use. You can order a CD from the website. The software license is free, but they charge around $30 to cover the cost of the media (CDs) and shipping.

nVidia They make the TNT and GeForce graphics cards. They also bought the Voodoo line from 3dfx.  You should be able to get a Voodoo 3 for around $100, I think.

SonicBlue S3 Inc. bought Diamond Multimedia, the makers of the excellent Monster 3D video cards. (Diamond also made modems and soundcards.) Then S3 named the combined company SonicBlue. Updated device drivers and demos can be found there.

Red Hat Homepage Red Hat offers a version of Linux. Red Hat Linux has support for a wide variety of PC hardware including videocards, soundcards, CD-ROM drives etc. It comes with an optional graphical interface. Red Hat Linux is free to download here. (Don't do that unless you have broadband.) Or you can mail order it on CD for about $50. (I got version 4.2 for $30.) You can have Linux and Windows installed on the same computer simultaneously. Red Hat also offers applications for Linux, including an office suite called Applixware. (Linux is a version of UNIX that works on IBM compatible computers including some 386 machines.)

Mirabilis Homepage Mirabilis is an Israeli company that offers free internet software. Their program ICQ allows users to see when their friends ("contacts") are logged onto the internet. AOL bought Mirabilis and the ICQ software.
