CNET Compares 5 Alternative Operating Systems
Non-Microsoft Operating Systems
Be
Be made the BeOS. It is a relatively new graphical operating
system. You can have BeOS on your computer at the same time as
Windows or Linux. The BeOS is a 32 bit OS with a 64 bit
filesystem called BFS. It runs on both Windows machines and Mac
PPCs. It features networking support, multitasking,
"pervasive" multithreading and support for multiple
processors (SMP). It is bundled with a web browser called
NetPositive, an email client, and a basic web server. The
original price of the BeOS was between $70 and $100 for a full
version. That's about the cost of a Windows upgrade. I
believe the price for the BeOS CD went down to about $30 later.
Also, Be offered a special version for dowload for FREE. However,
the BeOS was bought by Palm
Computing, makers of the Palm Pilot. The BeOS technology will
be used to improve the PalmOS. The BeOS may disappear.
QNX Sofware Systems Limited This company developed the QNX operating system and the Photon GUI. QNX is Unix-compatible. It's supposed to be pronounced "Q-nix." (I still think of it as "Q-N-X".) QNX can be used for everything from the smallest "embedded device" to the largest multiprocessor server. It supports networking regardless of the size of the device. QNX is free for use at home or at school. Only business users must pay. (added 12/17/98, updated 2/18/02)

Real/ 32 Operating System. This is the homepage for Logan Industries Incorporated. They distribute this product for its developer Intelligent Micro Software. Real/32 can run Windows, multi-task DOS applications, and support a network. It also allows many users to log in at the same time, much like Unix and VMS. The OS is derived from Digital Research's "Concurrent CP/M" and Novell's MDOS (Multi-user DOS). Real/ 32 is intended for corporate users.
