Unreal is a first person game in the style of DOOM and Quake. It was intended to be the ultimate multiplayer game. It wasn't. Unreal Tournament was released to satisfy multiplayer fans. The graphics of Unreal are good -- the outdoor scenes are stunning -- and the soundtrack is great.

If you have a Pentium II and a Voodoo2 accelerator (or, better yet, a pair of them), get this game. New copies are only $10. If you have an older Pentium and already have Quake 2, DOOM, and Jedi Knight, you should probably pass on it. Personally, I still use a Pentium MMX @ 233 MHz with a Diamond Monster 3D accelerator and only 32 MB of RAM. The picture quality is excellent, but the game seems to stutter a bit, especially with all the options turned on. I think this is due mostly to the small amount of RAM I have. An upgrade to 64 MB of RAM would prevent the frequent hard disk accesses that slow the game down.
Anyone who's already beaten all of the big name first-person shooters and wants more is probably better off buying Unreal than buyings expansion packs for Doom, Duke Nukem, and Quake.
I already have Quake, both Doom games, both Dark Forces titles et cetera so I'm not really blown away by Unreal. The game isn't a major revolution. From what little I've seen of GL Quake II, I'd say the graphics technology is pretty even (with the exception of Unreal's gorgeous outdoor scenes). Unreal is nicer looking but slower on older hardward. Quake II is fast on smooth. Unreal is supposed to have great enemy AI but I don't see much evidence in the standard single player game. The is a special multiplayer game where you play as the only human player against computer-controlled opponents called Bots. Pretty cool idea.
Now that much time has passed you will probably avoid the problems I had installing and running Unreal. I had at least a dozen crashes during setup. I exchanged the CD for another copy. Still had problems. Even after getting it installed I had some problems running it for a while. Then once I got that worked out, I couldn't get the "game content" -- maps, sounds, textures -- installed to my hard disk from setup so I wouldn't have to read levels from the CD.
I ended up copying the entire game, 450 meg, to my hard drive. Then running setup from the hard drive to install the game engine. Then I copied the game content to the game directory manually. Finally, I manually edited the path statements in my unreal.ini file.
Note that even when running the entire game from the HD, you still have to wait a while for the levels to load. There isn't a huge time difference between loading from the hard disk compared to the CD if you have a 24X CD like I do. At least the music keeps playing during loading. The music is great. Originally, Voodoo Rush owners couldn't use their cards with Unreal. They had to use software rendering. Fortunately, there is now a patch for owners of old copies of the game. New copies of the game probably come with Rush support. Voodoo and Voodoo2 based cards work. OpenGL and Direct3D support also were added through patches.

Update: A Voodoo Rush patch has been released for Unreal. (8/20/98)
