Darnell and Cory Daye back in 92 when they were performing at the 9:30 Club, I have a

What a great website - a truly comprehensive resource! I first encountered Kid Creole
& The Coconuts when I lived in England in the early/mid Eighties. When ever I listen
to them now, I am once again that twenty-something wanting to party till dawn. It surpised
the Puerto Riccan ladies I worked with that a guy as "white" as me could have so
much soul! Guess I wasn't wasting my time with all that partying after all...

There are lots of stars, but there's only one kid! This credo flushed into my mind when I
saw The Kid and his crew at the Plaspop festival in Elst near Arnhem in Holland today. He
still got plenty of energy, buyt sadly didnt got the time to express it all. Cause he was
top of the bill and the act before him played an encore. Due tot local rules the end of
the feztival was fixed at 11 pm so after only 45 minutes it was the end of the show
(instead of the announced 75 minutes!!!). But what I saw was good. Only 4 songs, but...
extended play. Started with Stool pigeon, Don't take my coconuts, then a bluesy song (I'll
check it out) and It's automatic as the grand final. Kid was good and so was the crew (11
boys and girls). Bongo Eddie as a dual vocalist and of course 3 fresh coconuts (remember
Fresh fruit in foreign places ahu?). As usual great horn-section and funky basic rhythms.

Kid gave a open air concert on the harbour in Algehro, Sardinia. What a thri l, it was
just like old days, simply great, the music, the band and of course the Coconuts - wauw!!

"He's a legend to his own eyes
" With these ironical words did Bongo Eddie
introduce the Kid for the show in Nice, on Saturday, July the 29th. Let me tell you
something : after this show, he'll sure be a legend for all the people who attended, as
well as for their family, friends, co-workers and anybody they know
In front of a
"not so enthusiastic crowd" at least at the beginning of the show, the Kid and
his crew turned the heat on during a 85 minutes astounding performance ! What an
experience !!! I had not seen the band in concert since the beginning of the nineties. It
seems that August Darnell just gets better and better as the years go by : I had never
seen him move so well, directing very efficiently what seemed to be a very young aged
group of musicians (only Bongo Eddie remained from the original band
), and hav ng
reached some kind of perfection in his stage game with both Bongo Eddie and the
girls
Speaking about the girls, let's remain on the subject for a minute
One
thing that I thought would be very difficult to handle as the years would past was the
changes occuring in the Coconuts group, especially after Adriana Kaegi (the master
choreographer and leading spirit of the original Coconuts) left the band. Well, i seems
the band passed the test very successfully ! With a totally renewed set of Coconuts, the
Kid (who else can be behind all this
) managed to re-create the spirit of the
original Coconuts in a really wonderful, wonderful way ! He actually managed to take it to
higher grounds : the way the girls just ignore and despise the Kid during most of the
show, forbidding any emotion to show on their face except boredom and disdain (and even
some more aggressive stuff as the Kid criticize their sensuality
) turns the whole
thing into some kind of fun act play, which you can do nothing except enjoying. You can
understand behind all that mise en scene that, despite the character he plays and the
stage clothes the Coconuts wear, August Darnell has a deep, deep respect for women
.
Taking the heritage of such wonderful artists as Adriana, Cheryl, Cory and the others is a
very heavy load. The 3 wonders that I saw on Saturday evening managed to do it perfectly.
Two of them seem to be from England and Nothern Europe , while a third one is from
Australia. They sure can dance, entertain and, to repeat myself, they bring a lot of
respect to the r role and talent. Bongo Eddie was a perfect companion for Darnell's
performance, watching these two was extremely funny. Suffice to say that the crowd got
very excited as the show went on, and the whole Garden of Cimiez (a wondeful place where
the Nice Jazz festival took place
) was turned into a giant Night Club when the band
played the first notes of "Annie
". By the time "Endicott" had
begun, you could tell that Darnell had successfully passed a very difficult challenge : in
quite a short time (the shows I saw during the eighties averaged 1h 45mins), without
playing as many hits as he could have ("I'm a wonder ul thing..", "My male
curiosity", "The lifeboat party", "Caroline was a drop out",
"The sex of it", "Dancing at the Bains Douches", "If you wanna be
happy" where not heard during that evening), and in front of a very large crowd (the
african star Youssou 'dour was programmed on the same stage, just after the KCC show) in
which most of the attendance hardly knew him, he was able to impress in the mind and heart
of all the people present the status of a major entertainer in the world of music, which
he dese ves without question. One unexpected event of that evening was what took place
after the show. I had heard about Darnell's gentleness and the way he and the band would
be very warm and kind when approached backstage by someone from the audience. This was
exactly what I experienced after the concert. Not only could I get an autograph from the
star himself, but I could appreciate the way he treated each and every person (and I mean
EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM
) with a lot of respect and attention, being incredibly kind
and patient, even with journalists a d photographers, who are not always very easy to deal
with. As well as a magic entertainer, Mister Darnell seems to have a very noble
personality (as well as Bongo and the girls who were very easy to approach after the
show
). Of course, this is show business, where image is everything, but what I saw
during those special moments did not seem fake at all. My wife took pictures of the Kid
and the girls after the show. Hopefully (if the pictures are good), I'll send them to The
Chameleon so that he can let them all of you enjoy them. Greetings to all of you Creole
fans. Sorry for being so long, but as you can tell, I'm a big fan of the guy and it makes
me get a little emotional when I recall of his presence. Don't miss that show if you have
a chance to see it (I had a 200 kms car ride to see all this). Thank you Mister Darnell.
As I told you after the Nice show (I was that guy with a black T-Shirt and a black and
brown jacket), you're just as young as ever. May you keep entertaining us for many, many
years.

The show @ the birchmere was excellent. Different band except Edie,Kenny. I guess, after
20 years there's going to be transformations. Opened with the Turkey trot, played
Flip, flop, and Fly, Automatic, Endicott, Annie, possibly Stool pigeon. The club disc
urages dancing since it's a sitdown dinner club; however, after several conga lines snaked
thru the audience, everyone was dancing with our backs against the wall!!!!

Hi..... I´m working in Hamburg at this Time and was searching(sorry my English is very
bad) the net to find something about Mr.Creole. I listened to a Music Casette from my
Brother some years ago (It was a Live Concert) and the only thing i want to know was
"Wow ..how does this Band look like that makes this absolute weird funky salsa
whatever -kind of music. So i went to the next shop and asked them if they sell something
from Kid...."Who the Hell is Kid Creole?!?" Ok...Next Try. A week later i found
a Video Casette "live in Paris" from 1989. What can I say...It was a very very
funky show with Mr.Creole and the whole band performing like hell! Sadly I was too young
to see this concert...They really burned the place! This Video is one of the best
music-videos i own! But it's time to get some new stuff from this band! I listened to some
CDs from the early ninetees but I don't liked them. I think I look for something from the
eightees... Greetings from Hamburg!!! Stefan

Probably my all time fav album is DBOSB. I can still remember the tingle of excitement
ordering and receiving the LP. Prompted me to paint the album cover on my walls, doors,
wear Zoot suits, hats. So exciting and different from the rest of the bunch of 1 76.
Personally like Sour&Sweet with LoveBug a close second.Shame it all ended so quickly
as the second&third albums were pretty dire except for a couple of tracks. Lyrics
still had something though. RCA could not have been too happy. I can recall reading
lues&Soul magazine at the time which said they were very late delivering and over
budget! still, without that break Kid Creole would never had created and the first 3
albums from them were impressive. Still looking for Fresh Fruit on CD. Well time to go
Zoot Suit City.

I was a big fan back in college, had a picture of the Coconuts hanging on the wall. One
day I'm talking to a friend of mine at work. He had been out in LA during the later part
of the eighties trying to make it. He's an awesome guitarist. Anyway, one ay he asks me if
I knew that a mutual friend of ours was in a band in the eighties. I said, "Yea, she
said that they were big in Europe and Asia." At this point he tells me that she was a
Coconut, and my jaw hit the floor. I had no idea. Then I pulled out an old album, and sure
enough, there she was. As Mickey says, "It's a small world after all."

Kid Creole and his band belong to the most exciting musicians i ever heard. They take the
most personal things as themes for their songs and bring in a witty musical form. They
belong into the tradition of great songwriters and musicians like Brecht, Eisle ,
Bernstein, Schubert etc. Their show with dancing, parodistic action, special costumes is a
pleasure for heart and brain. I haven`t heard of the band since 1996 when they were
playing in Marktredwitz/Bavaria where we had a little chat with Kid Creole per onaly at
the cafe. I hope they haven`t stopped playing and we can hear them again one time. This
all concerning i am looking for contact and even for Videos from concerts. For Kid Creole
personal: I am the sculptor who did a big iron sculptur under the i fluence of your album
fresh fruit in foreign places, maybe you remember our chat with my girlfriend and your two

In July of '99 a friend and I had the pleasure to see The Kid at the Resorts Casino in
Atlantic City. Still one of the best shows I ever been to. His band was tight, and the
babes were hot.We had a chance to meet him and the rest of his international ba d of
renegades after the show. They all were so gracious from the first, "hello" to
the last "good-bye." I hope that they play New York for New Year's 2000!!

SNL 1980 - "Mister Softee." Coconuts singing and dancing in leopard skin bikinis
on a jungle set "...you're a softee by trade, Mister Softee's your name..." How
refreshing, amusing, sexy, entertaining. I was hooked. Chicago, 1986 - The Leisure Tour.
anced with Cheryl, got backstage pass. My mission: to become the first boy coconut.
Following month: headed to B'Dilli Bay (NYC) in search of Mimi (Cheryl). She was nowhere
to be found. Since then chatted on occasion with Gina (Addy) in between ski rips, who was
oh so nice, encouraging, and even sent me a postcard from Paris! She also gently broke the
news to me that Mimi had sailed away leaving no forwarding address. Then I fully
understood the Kid's frustration and developed a newfound respect f r him. And like the
Kid, although I lost more than I gained, I've managed to carry on. A year later I met
Deborah Harry, and the rest is history.

When i was in high school, the "alternative" music radio station used to play
"Endicott" and "Annie" on occasion. For years I was trying to trak
down Kid albums with little luck. Finally, just as Redux came out, I bought that and
Private Waters. Since hen, i've been able to track down most of the pre-Redux stuff, but
now that I see how much work he's done since, I must go on more quests... I was lucky
enough to catch the band at Tramps in NYC a couple of years ago, and they put on one of
the best shows I've ever seen! Even the 60+ year-old couple next to me was dancing the
whole night (no lie! she was even dancing on the chair for some of the night!!!).
Meanwhile, thanks for the page! Finally a place where I can get legit information!

I found this site through Alta Vista. I check every couple of months to see if any
Kid-related info is on the web. I've been seeing DBOSB and KC and the Girls for almost 20
years. In fact, I lived in the same apartment building as the Kid in NYC for a few years.
I'm glad to see that I'm not their only remaining fan! The best way to describe my
appreciation of the Kid and related Ze Record Artists (Seize the Beat is still one of my
favorite albums!) is I am a Kidhead (like a Deadhead!). I've seen the various incarnations
of Savannah and the Kid, as well as Coati, Chri tina, etc. so many times I've waltzed
onstage with Adriana at Westbury Music Fair, Seen them at Squat Theater, Tramps, the Ritz
among other venues including The World on Houston St. in Alphabet City and in Europe too.
Needless to say I LOVE those guys! Here in Northern CA, they don't know much about the Kid
but, I'll change that! Plus, with the Kid playing in Las Vegas at the Desert Inn in June,
I'll be seeing them where they belong - amongst the glitz of Vegas! Anyone out there with
info on the Kid, Coati, etc. let me know! -Larry

Also have one video live at the Ritz, all though mine say's New York not Paris. Definately
going to see Kid do his stage thang in Manchester and the gig at Kew (I've waited aprox 18
years for this!!!) Can anyone tell me where I can buy copies of the following items that I

tape/cd/m.disc/video(need vhs pal) their copy for me or alternatively, will copy something
i've got in return, on to tape/M.Disc. Have all albums except those wanted above. Great to

First of all, I'd like to thank the Chameleon on providing such a wonderful and
informative site for all of us Kid Creole and Savannah Band fans. I would also like to
thank all of the people who took the time to share their comments about the Kid. I feel
ike I've come home! I first became aware of the Kid by accident in 1984 while stationed in
England in the Air Force. A friend taped a TV musical of the Kid(Lifeboat Party) off
British TV, and I was hooked. I immediately went to the record store and bought every kid
Creole album I could find. I still have a few on vinyl including Off the Coast of Me,
Doppleganger, Fresh Fruit, an In praise of Older Women... .I also have Private Waters and
I, too have Seen the Woods on cassette, as well as Kid Creole Redux, You Should have Told
me..., and To travel Sideways on CD. After a while, I also started to check out the
Savannah band(2 cds) The music is one of a kind and "happy feeling" kind of
music. I have been fortunate to have seen the Kid 3 times in the Baltimore/Washington area
over the last 6 years, and like many of you, I'm always on the lookout for his next show.
Maybe I'll go to Vegas! Still looking for Wise Guy and The Coconuts album. This s te gives
me hope that I can complete my collection. I'm in the radio business, and I have yet to
hear anything as original as the Kid's music. Unfortunately, the powers that be don't
consider him"radio friendly". (What a joke!) Anyway, all are welcome to -mail me
with questions or information, and I pledge to share any info I have with the masses. Long
live the Kid(King)!

What can I say? Their music is full of all the joys and passions of life. It is music to
be danced to with a smile on your face and your mind fully engaged. I bought "Wise
Guy" back in 1983 on the advice of a cousin who'd seen the band in New York and
couldn't shut up about them. Needless to say, they lived up to the hype. Since then I have
remained a dedicated fan, buying up all the lp's 12'' singles and C s I can find. Only
once since I've been of club age have they swung through this part of the country--I was
there, of course. I was surprised to find out that the band is still releasing albums
overseas. They're not in the stores here, and I've seen no promo anywhere. Go figure...

Just a quick one to mention that the single by Fatboy Slim "Gangsta Trippin"
released recently, owes a lot to Tropical Gangsters. I don't think there is a direct
KC&TC sample in there, certainly nothing credited, but the vibe definitely pays homage
and the title also gives a bit away. I am not aware of any other tracks sampling the Kid,
is anyone else ?

What a fantastic site. Congratulations Chameleon. I've been starved for information for
years and now it comes all at once I've been a fan since I heard the dulcet steel pan on
"Off the Coast of Me" back in the early 80's It is a pity the Kid didn't use
genuine steel pan in some of his later albums, but apart from this minor gripe I have
terrific admiration and respect for ne of the greatest exponents of contemporary music and
songwriting. I have had many joyful hours listening to his never boring work. (and of
course his great musicians). Thanks Kid. I saw the Kid on Roy and HG's Panet Norwich the
other night.Excellent performance. Maybe he will now tour Australia. If so we will make
him very welcome. One of my audio treasures is a copy of Gichy Dan's Beachwood #9. Like
much of KKATC and Dr Buzzard's it's very happy stuff and well worth seeking out. What
about a Reissue on CD? Made available through this site it would be very successful. Keep
up the good work. Jim S

I bought 'Off The Coast Of Me' when it was first released in England and played it 'till
it melted. I would love to get my hands on that album again but I haven't been able to
find it (I've been scouring the second hand shops for about ten years). Excellent site,
keep up the good work. Saw 'the Man' on Roy and HG the other week and loved it. Best
regards.

I grew up with the music of the Savannah Band and Kid Creole. Not well enough known in
this country (try finding albums in our biggest music stores) I had to buy cd reissues
from the USA last year. An absolutely excellent band and this is a great site.

If only they could have toured Australia during the mid 80's. What a party that would have
been! My "Leisure Tour" tape has had it. I need to see the "Lifeboat Party
Tour 1983" video badly. Can it still be purchased? In my view, KC&TC are one the
all time great original bands and most worthy of their own web-site. Well done Chameleon.

Have loved August Darnell since Dr. Buzzard's OSB. I have seen his band many times in
Washington, D.C. and proposed to my wife after seeing them at the 9:30 Club. I was
carrying the ring during the concert and proposed at the Washington Monument. Anothe one
of the best kept secrets in the music industry. Come back to D.C. soon.

Nice job! I'm a major fan from L.A. days who used to see every Kid show at The Palace in
Hollywood in the mid-'80s. Once met Kid backstage, Adriana once called my house to chat,
and once slow-danced with ex-Coconut Cheryl Poirier onstage during a show. I ay have some
old photos I can scan for this site, I'll send 'em if I can find 'em. In the meantime, for

I feel extremely fortunate to have been able to witness the phenomenon known as Kid Creole
& the Coconuts twice. Once in '93 & once in '95. The first time was an
indescribably over- whelming experience. To actually see what I had only dreamed o . It
was beyond words. I was sure that this was my one and only chance to witness this, so I
attempted to soak it all up. Anybody who has seen The Kid in action knows how hard this
can be. What a Show! I went home that night feeling that I had se n something that most
people had never heard of. Well that's there loss. The second time I was able to see them,
I was able to just relax and enjoy the show. I took an old friend of mine with me this
time. This friend was my roommate abo t 10 yrs. ago. Whenever I used to play my Kid Creole
records he would ask " What the hell is that stuff?!". Well after the show he
was a believer! He could see what I had seen all along. We even had the chance to chat for
a while with Bongo Eddie and g t a couple of hugs from Cheryl Poirier. Then the Kid graced
us with his presence for a minute or two. Then, with an autograph and a handshake, he was
off. From the first note of the first song I ever heard from this band, I was a fan. And i
will be for t e rest of my life. Thank you Kid Creole & the Coconuts

As promised, more musings from Kiddebris...It is a grave injustice that KC&C never had
a top 40 hit in the US, who was/is their manager? he could get them record contracts but
no radio airplay---Though Kiddebris is not a big VH1 fan, KC&C would have been erfect
for that channel, aimed at 25+age set---the Kid and Coati Mundi need to reconcile..since
they parted ways, KC&C are not quite the same, need some of his zaniness tempered with
the Kid's sensibility---Its Friday nite and Kiddebris is sitting at the omputer, while his
lovely wife sleeps--Kiddebris needs to get a life---Thanks to this site, Kiddebris is
experiencing a KC&C renaissance---Kidebris' favorite Kid album was Wise Guys. Every
song a powerhouse, the whole album sounds big and deliberate, Fra zetti the arranger did a
hell of a job--- Dont agree that Fresh Fruit in foreign places is the Kids best, in fact
In praise of older women and I too have seen the woods are clearly better---Private Waters
suffered from little or no Coati Mundi but was sti l excellent---You should have told me
was overall a disappointment---But Kiss me before the light changes and to Travel sideways
are very nice recoveries---I guess CBS records didnt want to keep them in their
stable---fools! More musings to come.."if you want to dream in style, stay a
while"

THANK YOU! I have been looking ALL OVER for info on and fans of this music! I only wish I
could FIND copies of the stuff I'm looking for... My favorite album is FRESH FRUIT... I
haven't heard it in years (my tape of it was lost during a move) but most of the songs are
SO clear in my head, a mark of The Kid's musical genius! I remember, about eleven years
ago, getting my hair cut by a guy who seemed a bit wacky. I'm sittin' there thinking,
should I trust him with my hair? Then, he pauses before he starts, to put FRESH FRUIT on
his cassette player! The guy could've cut all my hair OFF and I would've been a happy
camper... (it ended up being a pretty wild cut) Anyway, I'm glad to know there are so many
fans out there, and I'm so glad there is at least one lonely site on the Web devoted to
this blissed-out, incredibly diverse musical madness! Any hints on locating an older
release other than the greatest hits package would be appreciated (email me, any takers).
For now, I'll just sit here at my terminal and whistle "Table Manners" to
myself...

Wow! I haven't been this excited in a long time. Thanks so much for putting a web site on
the Kid. I was just goofing around on the net and found this site. I have to say that my
favorite artist/group of all time is the KC&C. I love their music. Some of my other
favorites are Gary Numan, Siouxsie and the Banshees, War, Prince, Joy Division, Selena and
quite a few others I'm forgetting. I'm a mexican american guy living in Austin tx for the
last 18 years. Discovered the Kid back around 87. I checked out Wise Guy from the public
library just because i liked the cover and the song titles. I listened to Annie Im not
your Daddy and Ive be n hooked on them ever since! I have tried to collect all the albums
theyve put out and have most although i dont have some of the most recent ones like
Traveling sideways and my biggest gap is not having the first album Off the Coast of Me.
If any one can help me get this album or even a good recorded tape I would be forever in
their debt. (at least I'd pay for the tape and the shipping.). Actually I'm hungry for any
albums that i dont have. I saw a few of them in the d scography you listed in the main
page. This really excites me. If any can help please E mail me. In any case I would love
to discuss the merits of any their albums. My favorites are I Too have seen the Woods and
Wise Guy. But love them all. Its kind of sad that they never acheived mainstream
popularity, but i guess that is part of my reason for l king them. No one i ever
introduced them to ever really appreciated them like i did. In any case, thanks for the
site and keep up the good work! F. Ramirez, fjr112595@aol.com April 18, 1998
