Stevie Hot News
Welcome to this edition of Stevie Nicks Hot News. This is the first
newsletter in a while because things have been a little slow. Stevie
is still taking a break from recording her new album as Sheryl Crow
(her producer) completes her tour. We expect her to be back in the
studio soon.
Stevie joined Sheryl onstage for a song as Sheryl's tour passed
through Phoenix. Sheryl and Stevie seem to have become good friends.
There have been numerous interviews with Sheryl Crow and she
always seems to have something to say about Stevie. Here are
some clips from recent interviews with Sheryl:
Musician Magazine:
"The work we've done [Stevie and Sheryl] so far has been on stuff
that she [Stevie] has already written. We've done four songs and
we're getting ready to do the fifth one. Then we're going to start
writing".
Boston Globe:
"She [Stevie] and I have had such a similar path," says Crow. "She
became well-known at 29 and I got my first record deal when I was
29. We're also similar in that we're both matriarchal. When we go out
on the road, we take care of everybody. We're not just the captain
of the ship, we are the mother -- and the person who is challenging
everyone musically".
Reuters News:
"I guess my role in this is really to try and create what she
[Stevie] feels is an accurate picture of who she is,'' Crow says.
''She's a really prolific writer. I think the thing she has suffered
in the last few years is when she goes into the studio, there's
always a male producer that wants to make her into something that is
maybe not as intimate as what she sees her music as being. Trying to
get that on tape is going to be the real trick.''
Celebrity Style
In the May 99 issue of Celebrity Style magazine (the special music
issue), Stevie's name is listed on the cover as one of the "20 Music
Stars With Real Style". Inside, there's a small 1997 photo of Stevie,
with the following blurb:
Enchanted Goes Gold
The Enchanted Boxed Set was certified Gold on April 7, 1999. With
that, every solo album Stevie has released has received a Record
Industry Association of America (RIAA) certification of Gold or
better.

Here is a REVIEW from the Sheryl Crow concert where SteviE
appeared!!!!!!
Stevie is currently in LA working on her new album. Sheryl Crow is
helping produce the album, so Stevie is sort of working around
Sheryl's schedule. Sheryl has recently released her own album and
that takes a lot of her time.
~~~~~~~Billboard's Year End~~~~~~~~~~~
Stevie continues work on her new album. We realize that fans are getting
a little impatient, but Stevie is working hard to get the album out as
soon as possible. She wants this to be a very special album and she's
taking steps to make sure that happens. She has recruited some very
good talent to help her out. There's still no official release date, but
please be patient. We would prefer Stevie took her time and got it the
way she wants it.
Stevie will perform a benefit concert on September 23rd sponsored by
Wells Fargo. "The Wells Fargo Stevie Nicks and Friends Concert", will
benefit the Arizona Heart Institute building fund and will take place at
America West Arena in Phoenix. Sponsorship packages are available now,
which include premium concert seats. Standard seating will go onsale in
mid-summer. For sponsorship packages, call Gerry Kroloff from the AHI
at (602) 266-2200, ext. 4619 or email her at gkroloff@azheart.com.
For more details visit the Arizona Heart Institute webpage at
www.azheart.com.
Stevie will get more involved with her online fans. She has just began
working with the Nicks Fix to do a feature called "Ask Stevie", where
the fans get a chance to ask Stevie a question and have the answer
posted on her website. We have just began taking questions. To find out
how to participate, go to http://nicksfix.com/askstevie.htm. This is an
exciting time for the online Stevie fan population, which is growing daily.
The VH1 Storytellers benefit CD is scheduled for release on April 25th.
It
will include songs from the more popular Storytellers and will include
two
appearances by Stevie....one from her Storytellers (Edge of 17) and one
from Sheryl Crow's Storytellers (Strong Enough). The CD is on
Interscope Records and proceeds will be going to the City Of Hope
children's charity.
Okay, Folks!
I just weasled my way through many departments of the America West Arena
until I finally got through to the booking department. I spoke to a
young lady there. I told her that I had received a Tour - City listing
for the 2000 Tour of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. I stated that
I've been informed of a September 25th show at America West Arena. She
told me that, at this time, she can provide me with neither a Nay or
Yeah, but that if I was going to publish these dates, I should put
"Subject to Change".
She seemed more concerned with the exact date and not the fact as to
whether or not Lindsey & Stevie were performing. So I tend to believe
they will be performing, but that the dates have not been confirmed.
That's good news, as far as I'm concerned!
onelist.
MY REVIEW OF HOUSE OF BLUES SHOW AND ALSO SUN THEATRE
Information on Stevies' Percussionist
Stevie performed at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, CA on December 28th and 29th. The small venue was the perfect setting for an audience clearly made up of serious Stevie fans. Stevie looked and sounded great and did a crowd-pleasing set comprised of material well known to us all.
Stevie joined Sheryl Crow onstage at Lilith Fair in Los Angeles on July
17th to sing Strong Enough. The crowd gave Stevie a very warm welcome
. 100 Greatest
E!Online lists VH1's 100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll. Stevie is ranked
at #14. VH1 will reveal all 100 "rock" greats in a five-hour, five-night
documentary series, debuting July 26.
The Summer '99 edition of The Musician's Planet had a cover story about
Sheryl Crow with the following Stevie mention: "Sheryl somehow found
time or a break during the massive, globally reaching Globe tour to
return to that producer's chair this past May for four weeks in the
studio with Stevie Nicks, the famed Fleetwood Mac vocalist turned solo
artist. Sheryl and Stevie had previously collaborated on two tracks for
1998's Practical Magic soundtrack, "If You Ever Did Believe" and
"Crystal"-completed during a "crazy," whirlwind, two-day session, no
less-and had already recorded four more cuts for Nick's next solo album
before she hit the road. "It's exciting," Sheryl says of working with
Stevie again. "She's a little bit daunting, but fun. She's amazing to be
around and to work with. She's very present and down to earth, an
incredible dictionary of all kinds of references." Sheryl's already
pleased with some of the results. "Lindsey Buckingham [also of Fleetwood
Mac and solo fame] came in for one track," she reports. "He's amazing;
pretty close to perfect. Any guitar he picks up, you can identify his
playing immediately." Sheryl hopes to be able to produce the entire
record before the year's end, but she regretfully acknowledges that she
may have to share the producer spot if the sessions pick up again after
May, as she's already committed to being out on the road.
occasional leg warmer. Even when Fleetwood Mac split, Nicks remained
true to herself and her fans with her one-of-a-kind throaty vocals and
personal style that has withstood the test of time."
BOSTON GLOBE
Sheryl Crow is straddling two generations. She has toured with the
Rolling Stones and recorded a Bob Dylan song at the artist's request, so
she has earned classic-rock credibility. She's also been accepted as a
modern rocker whose last two albums sold a combined 15 million copies --
way more than the Stones and Dylan in recent years, meaning that she's
definitely reached the younger generation. "When I do interviews, people
always ask me how I feel about being lumped into the older generation,"
Crow says. "But I think of myself as this up-and-comer who never really
fit into that. I've been really lucky to get my own audience." A
restless artist who switched from being a Missouri schoolteacher to a
West Coast rocker back in the '80s, Crow is now living in New York City
and has put together a new band. "It was just time for a change," she
says of both moves. "I absolutely love New York," adds Crow. "I'm the
kind of person who has real problems making plans and I also don't like
to drive, so L.A. is always problematic. And L.A. is also distracting. I
find that most people I'm around there are always talking about
business. It creates this strange sort of panic that the phones should
be ringing and you should be out doing something."
Busy, busy, busy
The phones are still ringing for Crow, despite her change of address.
Her latest album, "The Globe Sessions," features several songs drawn
from romantic breakups that have occurred during her tour-heavy schedule
of the past five years. She's also stretching her career out. She made
her film debut as a junkie in Dwight Yoakam's "Minus Man," which was
screened at the Sundance Film Festival. She hopes to write a film score
in the future. She's producing a new album for Fleetwood Mac's queen
bee, Stevie Nicks, for whom she produced two songs on the recent
"Practical Magic" soundtrack. Most recently, Crow embarked on another
tour in March -- it includes two shows next week at Oakland's Paramount
Theatre -- featuring new guitarist Peter Stroud from Pete Droge's band.
Despite the success of her albums, "Tuesday Night Music Club" (1993) and
"Sheryl Crow" (1996), Crow endured frequent criticism from those who
felt her success was based more on her looks and from the contributions
of other writers and musicians. Though she is grateful to have been
embraced by the Stones, Dylan, et al., nothing has been more satisfying
than her recent alliance with Fleetwood Mac's Nicks. "She and I have had
such a similar path," says Crow. "She became well-known at 29 and I got
my first record deal when I was 29. We're also similar in that we're
both matriarchal. When we go out on the road, we take care of everybody.
We're not just the captain of the ship, we are the mother -- and the
person who is challenging everyone musically. "But when you come home,
it's a different thing. That was my experience when I came off the road
this last time. All of a sudden, the family that I built around me
wasn't my family. They all went home to their families. And that's what
motivates you to continue to go out on the road."
Endless inspiration
Like Nicks, Crow is a rock 'n' roll lifer ("it's my calling"), but "the
one difference is that I'd like to have children pretty soon." (Nicks,
who just turned 50, has voiced regret that she never had children.) Crow
has spent time co-writing songs with Nicks for the latter's album.
"Right now, we're doing five songs for the album that she had already.
And two of them are Buckingham/Nicks songs," Crows says, referring to
Nicks' pre-Fleetwood Mac collaboration with Lindsey Buckingham. Crow
also has kept intact her friendship with the Rolling Stones, who have
been an endless inspiration to her, not just for the guitar licks that
she has so obviously memorized but for their enthusiasm to keep going
decade after decade. "The biggest thing with the Rolling Stones is that
they're so obviously into the music and they get such a kick out of each
other," Crow says. "For me, that's the most telling experience. Just
watching the interaction between them when they were getting their new
live album together -- Keith (Richards) was acting as bartender and
listening to the record at full volume, while they were all pointing at
each other and posing during their solos. They're still just so into
music. I don't know what kind of lesson that is, but it certainly gives
somebody like me a great deal of encouragement." Crow listens to other
elders as well, among them legendary punk priestess Patti Smith. "I
played after her on a radio gig once and she smoked me. When she came
offstage, I said, 'I'm supposed to go on after that?' And she said,
'Just go out there and give 'em love.' I thought that was such a cool
comment. What a great attitude."
New Album | MTV News had an article about Sheryl Crow working on Stevie's new album. In the article Sheryl says: "I'm going in [to the studio] with [Stevie] in December and I think we're gonna co-produce it," Crow said, "Stevie knows what she wants, you know. It's great to work with her and also her songs are so great, so we're gonna go in and work together on it. We have a great dialogue and we work really well together, so we're just gonna kinda go in and make the album ourselves." |
OCT 98 | Last week, it looked like Fleetwood Mac's "The Dance" (Reprise) had taken its last spin around the floor, as it sunk to No. 198 on The Billboard 200. But this week the set rebounds to No. 154 in its 64th chart week. As Billboard Chart Department assistant Keith Caulfield points out, this is the Mac's longest-running album on the chart since "Rumours" had a 134-week stay beginning in 1977. |
