In late December 1999, and January, 2000, STEVIE NICKS did a few shows in intimate settings ,to warm-up for her new Springtime tour. I was fortunate enough to attend a December 28th show at House of Blues, Hollywood, as well as January 9th at the Sun Theater in Anaheim, California. Instead of writing two reviews,I have decided to instead do one review of both shows.
For the House Of Blues show, I was about 3 feet off center to the left from the stage. In the audience, on the balcony sat Mick Fleetwood, whom I met, and seemed to be in great spirits.
Stevie's brother ,Christopher introduced his sister, and the
opening song, "Outside the rain", began to play,a nd Stevie entered the
stage!
Looking trim, and stunning in her trademark platform boots, and
black flowing dress, Stevie began an outstanding set of well known songs
from her solo career, as well as a few from her days in Fleetwood
Mac. Stevie teased the crowd, as she cruised the lip of the stage, making
eye contact with her fans, and smiling proudly! Underplaying her "witch"
image a bit, Stevie chose to instead do a straight-forward rock n roll
show, carefully embracing each song with incredible passion, and energy!
Oddly, Stevie did not twirl during her set in Hollywood at all! She also did fewer costume changes, which kept her on stage longer, and allowed each song to start quickly.
At the SUN THEATER, in Anaheim, we had dinner
table seats, about 8 feet from the stage. Steven Spielberg attended this
show, as well.
I was a bit concerned about this performance, as I heard
Stevie had broken her foot on New Year's Eve, so I wondered how she would
perform. When Stevie entered the stage, she wore custom made Rebox
platform shoes, and went into a KILLER version of "Outside the rain". She
later explained why she was wearing "These rediculous shoes",and
everyone giggled with her. As the show progressed, Stevie got wild, and
began to twirl on her broken foot, and really started grooving! Instead
of downplaying her "mystical" image, she embraced it, and gave a totally
surreal performance, even kicking her leg HIGH above her head at the end
of "Stand Back"!
It didn't hurt having a totally HOT band playing for
her,either!
For these series of shows, Stevie had a new percussion player
with her, named
