About IBA


History

This may come as a surprise to many but it is a fact that the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) is the oldest graduate business school outside North America. It was established in April 1955 in collaboration with the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce, University of Pennsylvania. Later, it was associated with the University of Southern California. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) spent $10 million on establishing facilities at IBA. Fifty prominent American professors were assigned to IBA, while 72 Pakistani faculty members received advanced degrees from Wharton and USC. The UNCTAD/GATT International Trade Centre, Geneva, has selected IBA as a Centre of Excellence for training Pakistani exporters. IBA is the largest graduate business school in the Third World in terms of the number of business academic programs offered.

1955 IBA starts in the PIA Building, Strachen Road, Karachi.
1961 IBA shifts to Kandawala Building, M.A. Jinnah Road, Karachi .
1965 Two new campuses constructed: Main campus at the University Road, Karachi and the city campus in downtown Karachi on Garden Road.
1967 Launched an evening program for working managers interested in part-time business studies .
1982 A three-year BBA(Hons) Program starts for students who have completed their high-school. This move recognized that students were making their career decisions after their high schools.
1983 Center for Computer Studies (CCS) is established in collaboration with IBM, Pakistan for overcoming the shortage of computer specialists. A Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in System Analysis is offered.
1988 CCS starts a two-year MBA program in MIS.
1990 PGD (Computer Science) starts in the evening program for part-time students.
MBA (Executive) program starts at the city campus on self-financed basis.
BBA (Executive) starts at the city campus on self-financed basis.
MBA (Banking) Program starts in collaboration with ANZ Grindlays at the city campus. Later the program is continued in collaboration with ABN Amro.
MBA (Marketing of Financial Services) starts in collaboration with CitiBank in the evening program.
1994 IBA obtains a University Charter through the act of parliament and gains an independent degree granting status, with the director of the institute having the status of the vice chancellor.
MBA (International Business and Export Marketing) starts in collaboration with Export Promotion Bureau of Pakistan at the city campus.
1997 MIS program is completely restructured and redesigned at the CCS.
1998 A three-year BBA (Hons) programs in MIS program is initiated at the CCS.
PGD (Computer Science) Program at the city campus is redesigned.
1999 Business & Information Technology Students' (BITS) Club for CCS Students formed
A three-year BCS (Software Engineering) program starts at the CCS.
