Dmitri Hvorostovsky Live
As I had
promised before, below follows my complete review of Dmitri
Hvorostovsky live at Teatro
Municipal do Rio de Janeiro on September 8, 1997 at 20:00 hrs. The
pianist was Mikhail Arkadiev and all praise must also go to him. He played beautifully making the
piano indeed sound as an orchestra (as Le Figaro suggested in Paris).
I'd already seen Dmitri a couple of years ago in
San Francisco. But it was in the SF Orchestra Auditorium which is very large and bad for
singers. His voice did not sound very big and he had some problems with style (mainly with
Rossini). This concert also had Olga Borodina and she had no problems being heard. Her
voice is large. However in the recital I saw this week, Dmitri was excellent, his voice is
large (at least for a medium size theater as the Municipal is, 2000 seats more or less)
and he sang from Caccini to Verdi adapting to many different styles well. After the
recital I left the theater with a hope: Dmitri is 35 and if he continues progressing he'll
certainly be the year 2000 Verdi baritone and I see no rivals in the horizon (I have to
hear Chernov live to compare).
