January - April, 1998

April 6, 1998

Well, spring is nearly here. My spring bulbs are about 3 inches tall now, and the snowdrops are fully open. My basement is full of happy little seedlings, and we've even switched over to daylight savings time (hope you remembered to set your clocks ahead this weekend). I don't know about you, but I'm ready to get out the garden tools and get to work. I just hope my back is ready, too!

This update is a small one. You will find a couple of interesting new links on my Favourite Gardening Links page. You can ask Mr. Grow your gardening questions, or check out the Garden Humour site for some humorous garden tales. I've also added a new page of additional links, called More Gardening Links. It contains a number of links that I haven't reviewed. Have a look, you might find some hidden gems.

My site has won another award. You can check it out on my Awards Page if you are interested. And don't forget to stop by and read or sign my Guest Book. I love hearing from you.

March 28, 1998

Well, here in Southern Ontario we had a brief visit from winter since I last wrote, complete with a few inches of the white stuff, just to remind us of what life was like before El Nino. But the last couple of days of balmy 20+ degrees C have made that into a memory. The robins are back, the snowdrops I planted last fall are poking their white heads up out of the earth, and today we had the first rain storm that smelled like spring. I think its really on its way. Here is what's new this time:

  • Part 2 of the article on starting seeds is now up on the Question of the Month page. This is the continuation of last month's article (part 1). I hope you find it helpful. Now is the time to be starting all those seeds, spring is coming faster then you might think. There is an additional link at the bottom of the page (in the "For Further Reading" section) that leads to a good article on starting tree seeds.

  • I have also added a guest book for all of you fellow gardeners to sign. There is room to add a comment, or perhaps your favourite gardening tip. I hope you will take a minute to stop by, and say hello.

  • The rest of the changes this month are mostly cosmetic. I hope that they make these pages look better on more people's browsers. I'm discovering that growing a web site is much like growing a garden. You learn a lot as you go along, planting here, weeding there, moving things around, until it starts to look like what you had in mind. And just when you think you have it like you want it, you look in a gardening book, or walk around someone else's garden, and get a whole new bushel of ideas! I have quite a few in mind for future updates, so keep coming back to check out what's new.

February 24, 1998

[Daffodils] The worst of winter is over now, and spring is just around the corner. Are you getting ready for it? I've perused my seed catalogues, placed my orders, and now have numerous packets of seeds all set for starting. How about you? There has hardly been time to work on the web site, but the update for February is finally ready. Here's what's new this month:

  • This month's Question of the Month is all about starting seeds indoors. This is part 1 of the article, check in next month for part 2.

  • A couple more people have expressed their enjoyment of this site by giving me Gardening site awards.

  • Check the gardening links page for a few new additions. One of special interest for those looking for something unusual is the Gothic Gardening site. New additions to the links are now marked with a [new] to make it easier for regular readers.

I hope all of you are well. Keep those e-mails coming, I love hearing from you. I welcome any suggestions for additions you'd like to see, or ideas for future articles.

January 5, 1998

Welcome, and Happy New Year, my fellow gardeners! May 1998 bring you growth, peace, and joy in all areas of your life. Here's what's new with the Green Gardener:

  • This section, for one thing. Look here for a summary of the latest updates.

  • In What I'm Reading Now you'll find a new book review - The Ontario Naturalized Garden. Don't let the title deceive you, this book will be of interest to all.

  • A new Question of the Month lets new gardeners know what all the fuss over mail order catalogues is about. Please feel free to add your two cents worth, don't be shy!

  • I've been complimented with some Gardening site awards. Check the links to the originators of the awards, to see the other recipients. Its a good way to find gardening sites culled by someone for quality.

  • Some new links have been added to the gardening links page. A little something for everyone - hostas, ponds, compost, weed identification, and more.

  • In other news, Santa was kind enough to bring me some new gardening books this Christmas, so look for more book reviews in future months. I try to do a new one every month, or every other month, depending on how much time I have to read. There's more time for that now, with the cold weather here to stay. Santa also brought me a self-watering seed starting tray from Lee Valley Garden Tools, so look for a product review later in the spring. Lets see how it compares to simple peat pellets.
That's about it - so what are you still doing here? Go look around!
