![]() Landscaping the Back Yard
These drawings show the layout of our back yard before and after the landscaping project. The yard is 63 feet wide, and 24 feet deep (from back of house). The pond is approximately 8 feet by 18 feet. The side lot lines run at an angle to the street, and to the house, which creates a larger side yard on the south side, and a smaller one on the north side. In the summer, when the sun is high enough in the sky to clear the next-door neighbour's house, the south side yard gets a lot of light. The raised beds are located there for growing vegetables and annual herbs. There is a 6 foot tall black iron fence around the back yard. We've planted a number of vines along the fence (hops, bittersweet, morning glory, etc.), as well as shrubs and tall grasses, for privacy. The fence gates are kept locked for safety, to prevent neighbourhood children from wandering in. This is an essential consideration with a pond that is nearly 4 feet deep in the deep end.
