Landscaping the Back Yard

A green frog, in a pot of
marsh marigold.

July 18, 1999
Planted vines along the fence. Bittersweet along west fence (1 male, 1 female), 2 hops vines long north fence. Also planted a dwarf globe cedar at the foot of the juniper tree beside pond. Planted a honeysuckle under the trellis at side of garage, plus some day lilies and blanketflowers (Gaillardia).

July 20, 1999
We have a frog. I think it's a green frog. It is sitting in the plant pots at the shallow end of the pond. The toad often comes to the pond at night and calls out.

July 24, 1999
Started laying stones around front lamppost, to cover the exposed part of the concrete footing.

July 25, 1999
Finished the stones around the front lamppost and planted a few perennials in and around it (gaillardia and black-eyed susan).

July 26, 1999
Bought an English pyramidal oak, a David Austin rose (pink), and some perennials, for the back yard.

July 29, 1999
Planted some perennials in the two beds against the house, including boston ivy to grow up the wall, and the David Austen rose.

Shopping for plants.

August 1, 1999
Planted columnar oak, and vines (a couple more bittersweet along west fence, and a couple of porcelain ivy and five-leaf Akebia along south fence).

August 2, 1999
More planting of perennials in back yard.

In front: day lily, ligularia; behind: switch grass, porcupine grass,
butterfly weed, purple cone flower, black-eyed susan.
In bog garden: astilbe, licorice flag, labrador violet, pink barrenwort,
Guizhou mugwort. On fence: common hops vines. (Aug. 15/99)

August 6, 1999
Laid the remaining flagstones as a path from the south side gate to the patio. We need several more to complete the path.
