Landscaping the Back Yard

September 26, 1999
Worked on the north side yard, set up new composters, small shed, and garden cart. It looks so much better.

October 9, 1999
Started getting the pond ready for winter. Removed and cleaned filters and pump, and put in bubbler.

October 10, 1999
Planted most of the pond plants into garden, still in their pots, except lilies. Lots of algae to remove.

Bought net to cover pond to keep leaves out.

October 23, 1999
Today we removed the remaining plants from the pond. Lilies were trimmed back, and lowered into the bottom of the pond. We put them in plastic mesh shopping bags, and lowered them with rope. Then we covered the pond with mesh to keep leaves out. We used bamboo poles across the pond to hold net up and out of the water.

October 28, 1999
Planted bulbs in the back yard, and beside the garage around the trellis.

November 18, 1999
Did outside cleanup, emptied rain barrel, plugged in pond heater, cleaned out hanging baskets and pots by the front door. Put patio furniture away.

That's it for the winter. Our summer-long project is put to bed as the snow starts to fly, the fish retire to the bottom of the pond, and ice begins to form on the water. Now we wait until next spring, to see what needs to be done next.
