SUNDAY STYLE INSITE RECOMMENDATIONS, PAGE ELEVEN

The Astronomy Cafe: Dr Sten Odenwald's "web site for the astronomically disadvantaged" is the perfect place to start for anyone getting into astronomy. Besides an FAQ section featuring "3001" questions, the site tackles topics like 'Big Bang Cosmology', 'The Infrared Universe' and (showing that it's not all serious business here) 'Space Movies' in an often interesting manner. The section featuring essays on astronomy and cosmology has such fascinating pieces as 'Science Fiction and Hyperspace Travel', Strange Galaxies' and 'Beyond The Big Bang'. These are wonderful to read mainly because they're written in "a semi-popular style". The almost image-free page downloads fast and the page design is basic and extremely effective. You might also want to try Phil Plait's Bad Astronomy - The Home Page for an equally entertaining and elucidating look at the subject, and the About.com site, Space And Astronomy for Kids, offers a brilliant introduction for young surfers.

Cramsession.com - Study Tips Section: Want to know how to do well in exams? Well, this site offers no guarantees that you will get through with flying colours, but it has some really useful ideas that will help you be better prepared for written tests. Topics covered include 'Assess Your Study Skills', 'How to Answer Exam Questions', 'Memorization' and 'How to Handle Time', and there's a convenient page of links to "good studying resources on the Web". If the tips here are not enough to inspire confidence, you might want to try the 'Study Strategies' provided by the University of Texas' Learning Skills Center. This site offers more adavanced swotting snippets.

Dinosaurs: Facts and Fiction: If you want direct and immediate answers to questions like 'When did the first dinosaurs appear on Earth?', 'Did people and dinosaurs live at the same time?' and 'How are dinosaurs named?', this is the site for you. The people who provide the information are respected authorities in the field of paleontology so you can be assured of getting the real deal here. It may all seem a bit dusty and dry, but anyone curious in finding out things about dinosaurs will get all the fascinating facts here. And for a zippier look at the subject, they can then go over to ABC Online: Walking With Dinosaurs. Devoted to promoting ABC's six-episode series of the same name, this site offers a gallery of dino pictures plus dino jokes, puzzles and games which should tickle the fancy of the young 'uns.

Healtheon Solutions for You and Your Family: It may be a commercial venture but Healtheon has put together a decent page that provides answers to some basic healthcare questions. The Medical Library is a neat feature that lets you search on "terms, drugs or conditions you wish to find". There's also a link for searching "advanced medical databases on the Web". The "Food Computer" section, which calculates calorie-burning times and reviews total diet and nutrition needs, and the Health Risk Appraisal page, where you can get scientifically validated answers to such questions as "How long will you live?" and "How tall will your children be?", should also interest health freaks.

McAfee.com: Probably one of the most helpful online PC care sites, McAfee.com offers services like 'PC CheckUp' to optimize your PC's performance, 'Anti-Virus Center' for virus detection and cleaning, and 'Support Center' for technical support and feedback. Yes, you have to pay for some of the services, especially the software downloads, but there's also planty of good free information here. The 'Virus Bulletin', which provides tips on avoiding computer viruses, and the regularly updated 'Virus Alerts' section are great for those who haven't a clue about the kinds of computer viruses to be wary of.

ZineZone.com: Calling itself "Home to Trailblazers Everywhere", this intriguing site clues you in on some of the most interesting reading material on the Web. There are 12 main categories -- Arts, Digital Tech, Eat & Drink, Entertainment, Extreme Sports, The Good Life, Music, News & Politics, Science & Nature, Sports & Recreation, Travel, Wealth & Worth -- and each one links you to a wide range of sub-categories. For instance, if you go to the Arts page, you can explore the Dance, Opera/Symphony, Screen, Theater links under Performing Arts or Comics, Drama, Fiction, Mysteries, Non-Fiction, Poetry and Science Fiction under Literature. There are lots of great articles here, and if the Douglas Adams interview I checked out is anything to go by, you can be assured of of high quality. ZineZone.com also offers another neat feature -- a chance to create your own Webzine. The home page is a bit on the busy side but it downloads quite fast.
