SUNDAY STYLE INSITE RECOMMENDATIONS, PAGE TWENTY-THREE

Conspire.com: Nothing can be more fascinating to the lover of weird tales than conspiracy theories, and the most intriguing of them are featured at this site based on the book, 70 Greatest Conspiracies of All Time, by Jonathan Vankin and John Whalen. Many of the classic conspiracy stories, including the JFK murder mystery and the UFO invasion cover-up, are compiled in the '60 Greatest Conspiracies of All Time' archive. The pieces are written in an entertaining style and are just long enough to whet your appetite for more, in which case you can look through the offerings of "enlightened crackpot literature" at Conspire.com's Book Depository. The site is updated regularly so you get new articles like 'Don't Change the Facts: True tales of media terror from the Far East. We lived it! We were there!' It's a well-designed page that doesn't have you waiting forever for downloads.

Gadfly Magazine: The online version of the US popular culture 'zine has some terrific pieces on movie and music icons of the past and present and caustic explorations of the motives of US politicians and showbiz impresarios. The March/April edition features a superb essay on Marilyn Monroe and a Web site that satirises George W. Bush. Not all the articles are accessible -- some are only for subscribers -- but there're enough goodies to keep you going back. Links on the main page include Back Issues and Other Publications.

Idealist: Looking for a search portal that will guide you through most of the non-profit organizations in the world? Then Idealist is it. This interactive site, put together by Action Without Borders, lists more than 20,000 non-profit organizations in 140 countries. The main page has a QuickSearch box that takes you to various organisations, resources and consultants, and offers convenient links to 'Career Center', 'Nonprofit Interships', 'Best Nonprofit Guides', 'Services for Nonprofits', 'Worldwide News' and 'Nonprofit Conferences'. The information is so comprehensive that if you ever decide to set your own non-profit organization, or need tips on how to improve the one you already belong to, this is the place where you'll find all the advice you'd need.

Panoramic Photographs Collection: Boasting a database containing "approximately four thousand images featuring American cityscapes, landscapes and group portraits", this site is a picture viewer's dream come true. The photographs from the Library of Congress, dating from 1851 to 1991, are not only of historical interest but are mainly artistically impressive as well. Anyone interested in photography will find a lot of useful ideas here, and the diversity of the subject matter -- beauty contests, disasters, sports, bridges, canals... -- ensures that there's something for everyone. You can search by keyword or browse the subject index, creator index and state and country index on the main page. And there are links to 'Special Presentations' like 'Shooting a Panorama', 'Selected Photographers' and 'Selected City Views and Disasters'.

Sex & Romance: Sorry to disappoint you guys, but this is NOT a porn site and NEITHER is it for guys. This Women.com offers single women, especially those who've been through a bitter divorce, some sage advice on getting on with life. There're useful tips in pieces like 'The Ex Files', 'Divorcee Dating Dilemmas', 'Let's Talk About Sex', 'The XY Files', 'The Medicine Cabinet' and 'Wildcard'. The articles may not weigh all the pros and cons levelheadedly, but most women lacking in self-confidence or trying to rebuild their self-esteem would find enough positive encouragement in them to think of dating (again). Of course, since this is a commercial site, you have to navigate through lots of 'buy it' ads, but that's a minor irritant compared to what you can gain for free.

The Why Files: Why has there been an alarming increase in devastating floods in many parts of the world of late? Why do asteroids and comets pose a constant threat to Earthlings? The answer to these and other similar questions can be found at this excellent site that tries to offer a look at the "science behind the news". And interestingly for a site that deals with serious topics, it's approach is breezy and, when appropriate, humor-tinged. The engaging five-page essay, 'Colossal Cataclysm -- Facing the Asteroid Threat', typifies the pop culture-referencing style of writing. It's a great site for both adults and young people seeking to improve their awareness of the forces that shape and transform our surroundings. Features on the home page include a 'News Flash' offering daily headlines, an archive of 'Filed Why Files', 'Cool Science Image' and a 'Forum' link.
