SUNDAY STYLE INSITE RECOMMENDATIONS, PAGE NINE

All-Movie Guide: There're hundreds of fairly good movie sites on the Web but only a few, like this wonderfully user-friendly film resource, cover the subject with the kind of thoroughness that would satisfy cineastes. Besides offering short, incisive reviews of the latest movies and video releases and bios on actors and directors, you can get information on just about any film ever made here by typing titles in a search box. Most of the reviews in the huge database provide a full credit list and even offer the titles of similar-themed productions for comparison. And all the important references are linked for immediate access. There're also useful features like Plot Finder, People Finder and Movie Maps which enable film buffs to find what they're looking for fast. The Essays section, dealing with the various genres and movements, is also first-rate. You're not going to find film craft better explained than in these crisp articles.

AudioREVIEW.Com: A site by audiophiles for audiophiles that encourages active and immediate participation by making every section readily interactive. If you're looking for a new tuner, amplifier, loudspeakers or a CD player, this should be your first opinion-search stop. Everyday users offer their views on more than 2,500 products, and if you have a specific question, you can post it in the Techtalk section. The site also offers surfers a chance to sell used equipment for free in the Classifieds/Marketplace section, and if you need to contact a particular manufacturer over a warranty issue, just click on Industry Directory which links you to the sites of major companies as well as retailers and recording companies. The forums are always interesting, with provocative topics like 'Worst Songs' and 'Embarrassed to admit' keeping a lively and often entertaining debate going.

ECO: Earth Communications Office : You don't have to be a greenie to know that Planet Earth is suffering, but for the cold facts on how we're destroying the environment, you have to visit this site. The information comes in brief flashes: 'Cars are Choking Us: Air pollution has led to a 79% increase in the number of children with asthma.', 'Lights Burning: The electricity used to keep our lights burning creates 39 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year.', 'Get a Tune Up: When just 1% of car owners get a tune up, nearly a billion pounds of carbon dioxide are kept out of the atmosphere.' But the whole point is unmistakable: be kinder to the environment. Every fact is accompanied by a useful tip, and it's this simple way of getting the message across that makes this site less preachy and more practical than other environmental Web domains. Of course, if you need more than just short facts and tips, you can click on the links to 'Biodiversity/Animals', 'Forests', 'Water', 'Climate Change', 'Waste & Pollution', 'Population', 'Youth/Student Action', 'Food', 'Energy', 'Parks & Wild Spaces' and 'Directories'.

Lies People Tell: Whether we like it or not, we're all compulsive liars. Of course, some of us lie quite a bit more than others, but that doesn't make us any less dissimilar. Which is why the mendacious lines that the witty and resourceful Chris Risele has catalogued here will be so enticingly familiar to most of us. You can enjoy the lies, which are categorised based on situations, as a 'Newcomer' or an 'Expert'. They're really a treat, especially since most of them are accompanied by hilarious cartoons. I won't spoil your fun by quoting samples here, but I think the most amusing lie here is the 'We're just good friends' line that women often pull on guys they don't want to get serious with.

Snakeskin: Poetry Webzine : Lovers of contemporary poetry will find much to relish at this site which is updated monthly. The poems by various hands may not be literary masterpieces, but they're witty, evocative and highly accomplished. The December issue has some nice selections by Jill Williams, Adrian Fox and Sylvia Parker. It's a simple, uncluttered concept and it works marvellously, right down to the big typeface and white space.

ThriveOnline : If you're into health issues, you should bookmark this site that deals with almost every aspect of physical and mental well-being in six neat categories -- 'Medical', 'Fitness', 'Sexuality', 'Nutrition', 'Serenity', 'Weight'. It may not have all the answers to you problems, but it certainly contains enough relevant information to tell you what's wrong and how you should deal with it. The Health Care Corner tackles such topics as 'Medical Tests Not to Miss', 'Are You at Risk?', 'Get the Best Care' and 'Resources'. And a box offering an alphabetical listing of all the major diseases under the heading 'Conditions' gives you immediate access to vital information. The news section tells you about the latest medical breakthroughs and other health-related matters, and the features on topics like dealing with depression and getting along with the family are excellent. There's also a Recipe Finder that takes you to a database of low-fat recipes, a Body Mass Index calculator, a Pregnancy Calender and various health quizzes to test your knowledge.
