BLACK JACKET: System Shutdown
Anarchist hardcore punk originating surprisingly out of Oshawa, ON. Vocals are angry and shouted for the most part (no cookie monster voice), but angry nonetheless. The music is fast hardcore punk rock. Lyrics target oppression and violence in our society amongst other things, with a strong anti-capitalist message. Definitely worth checking out if you're into a less dark approach to political punk.

BLACKEN THE SKIES: S/T
BLACKEN THE SKIES were a band from Greensboro, NC that played epic and emotional crust. There are the faster parts, but these are complimented by slow, suspenseful quiet parts and pounding build-ups. Vocals are great – growls and shrieks. The lyrics are extremely well written and cover a wide range of subject matter such as environmental destruction, body image, the conditioning of these standards, wage slavery, animal liberation, human liberation, etc… ‘A Vicious Cycle is Broken’ is a great song because the music is so strong, and the lyrical content is something we can probably all relate to. My favorite song, however, is ‘We Are All Guilty’ for the sick-rad riffage that starts this song up. It kinda reminds me of something THE BLACK HAND would do, but then it departs from there. The lyrics are an intense indictment of the death dealt out by the human species and the need try to combat this. BLACKEN THE SKIES features the guitar player of CATHARSIS, drummer of REQUIEM. Crucial stuff. (2004 – Crimethinc Records) |

CATHARSIS: Passion
If you haven’t yet heard CATHARSIS, this CD is fucking rad and is a great introduction to them. I’m still as impressed with them now as when I first heard them. It seemed to me that they blended the spirit, message and a little bit of the sound of newer crusty bands such as TRAGEDY with the brutal sound of dark ‘90’s hardcore such as INTEGRITY. This particular album seems to have a little bit less of the ‘90’s hc sound, but lyrics remain in that dark, poetic realm of demons, heaven and hell; raspy proclamations of freedom. This album also has two of my favourite songs: ‘The Witch’s Heart’ and ‘Deserts Without Mirages’. The first of these is a lengthy, heartbreaking song about the frustration of existing in a world you had no hand in creating, one that you want to destroy, and the conflicting feelings that can lead to self-destruction instead. And the song is written from the perspective of someone watching a person they care about suffering with this and lashing out at friends in the process. The second song I mentioned is a surprise on an album of crazy hardcore – a dark, reggae influenced song with lyrics lifted/inspired by GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR. “We’re accomplices all/It’s all beyond our control/We’re so innocent when the hammer falls…” (? – Crimethinc Records) |

CONQUEST FOR DEATH: Front Row Tickets to Armageddon CD
This is essentially WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? with a different drummer, however, the sound is slightly different. On this release, the singer Devon isn’t doing so much of the CHRIST ON PARADE/YOUTH OF TODAY style thing that was characteristic of all WHN? releases. It’s still pretty rad nonetheless though. The music is rippin’ hardcore punk with a lot of lyrics about war, living in a country on its way towards overt fascism, etc…

COUNTDOWN TO PUTSCH: Interventions in Hegemony 2CD
‘Interventions in Hegemony’ is a double-CD of diverse music accompanied by ideas of liberation and critiques of oppression. When I say diverse – I mean diverse. Hardcore, breaking down into improvised noise, saxophones screaming. But also quiet and laid back songs. There’s even some political theatre acted out in voice only. It’s true this isn’t really background music and requires some level of engagement on the listener’s behalf. The words are interesting and thoughtful, and some thought provoking. A 44-page booklet presents these words and artwork, as well as informs us of other COUNTDOWN TO PUTSCH releases. If you appreciate music as expression this release is definitely worth checking out.

THE INSIDES: Endangered Youngins
Indy rockish? I don't know. I'd like to say that if you like Weakerthans you might like this but I don't even know if that's a good description. A lot of it is slow and has sung vocals. It's definitely not my thing so I don't know how to describe it.

LEPER: Embarrassed to be Human
This is LEPER’s second CD, the first of which was a split CD-R with 69 CENT BURRITO SUNDAY. A little background though: this band existed for years as THE SUITS and released several CD-R’s in the past. This is by far the best of their material yet. An amazing synthesis of all their influences… You get blast-beats, breakdowns, thrash, sound clips about revolution, screaming, growling, male voices from Brett and Cody, and female voice from Beth, and some ska as well. Most importantly, you get awesome anarchist, anti-homophobic, anti-racist, anti-sexist lyrics that cover important issues like law, rent politics, capitalism, conformity, the Olympics, the environment, and more. One of the strongest animal liberation songs I’ve ever heard. I can’t recommend this enough.

MASSMÖRD: Inget Liv/Ingen Död
This starts with some stringed instruments in a quiet, sad intro that sets the tone for the record, but quickly blasts into the first song ‘Wasted Lives’, a song about suicide. This is heavy, down-tuned and epic hardcore, more brutal and sad than TRAGEDY, but more melodic than WOLFBRIGADE. Lyrics span a variety of topics from personal to social/political, and are sung by male/female vocalists. MASSMÖRD are from Sweden.

PECHEBLENDE: Collapse
PECHEBLENDE, from Quebec City, QC, play emotive crust in the vein of FROM ASHES RISE and TRAGEDY, but with brief parts that ring closer to NEUROSIS in the style of building and layers of riffing. All the lyrics are thoughtful, emotional responses to the world as it is, critical of the waste of life entailed by employment and progress. But in criticizing this, there is the hope and conviction in rejecting this ideologically, and working towards doing so practically. The art on this is very interesting and unique, not really conjuring any stereotypes or archetypes. If you’re into this style of stuff, this is definitely worth hearing. REQUIEM: Storm Heaven
REQUIEM was the band formed by some former members of CATHARSIS (Brian on guitar/vocals and Stef on drums/vocals) after the mentioned band’s demise. Musically REQUIEM commits to the musical direction CATHARSIS could have been heading, with greater influence from the epic crust realm (complete with some violin!). Brian trades in his insane vocal style from CATHARSIS and definitely not ÜMLAUT for a cleaner delivery, while Stef’s vocals are reminiscent of her sound in BLACKEN THE SKIES (gruffness, to shrieks, to operatic back-ups). The trade-off of vocals between them is great. The best song on here is ‘Bandit Queens/Pauper Kings’, which I contend is the greatest tribute to AMEBIX ever to be heard. The guitar chords and delivery that form the foundation for the song seem referential to a favourite riff from CATHARSIS. The structure of the song is undeniably based on that of ‘Chain Reaction’, but not in the same way other recent bands might base their songs on AMEBIX. Lyrically, this reverses the anarchist sentiment “No Gods No Masters”, extolling “All Gods All Masters”. Rather than a negation of the wrong, it becomes almost a philosophical battle cry about how to live life. Packaged in a black card sleeve, with the words ‘Storm Heaven/Unleash Hell’ stencil-cut out of it, a red inner sleeve explains how to use the cover as a stencil. These two outer layers are wrapped around a CD tray and a booklet containing all the lyrics, explanations and stories that accompany the music. This is a beautiful release on all levels: music, lyrics, artwork, packaging, and spirit. On the Crimethinc website, it says “Requiem has refused to record anything until now lest they perpetuate the commodity-oriented stupor that mires the would-be revolutionary underground in verbose inactivity”. I’m pleased they did choose to record and release this. (2005 – Crimethinc Records) |

RESERVE 34: Everything
Tim Drew of Spec 32 has shown us how to properly do a discography with this amazing CD. This is 39 songs taken from 2 7” records, a CD, a cassette, and as of now unreleased material, as well as an interview track of the band talking to Nardwuar the Human Serviette. The 8-panel two-sided insert contains photos, liner notes from band members, and lyrics to all the songs. It's almost difficult to give this a proper review because as of now I still haven’t made it through it all. It communicates the band’s importance… and with good reason. The music is high energy and fast, with cool breaks and passionately song personal/emotional lyrics. RESERVE 34 were from Vancouver, BC, and existed from 1996 to 2002 and apparently were influential in the incorporation of melodic sounds in modern hardcore. Top notch.

RESIST: Resistography 2CD
RESIST was one of the best anarcho punk bands of the ‘90’s. They formed in Portland in the late ‘80’s and released their first recordings in 1990. After RESIST broke up in 1994, members formed a variety of new bands perhaps the most notable of which was DEFIANCE. In 2007, three quarters of the original band held a reunion show, and two of the original members decided to continue the band. Their sound, similar to contemporaries UNAMUSED and DEPRIVED, was a melding of classic US hardcore with UK hardcore punk like that of CONFLICT and carried on the anarchist message of UK anarcho punk. These two CDs include remastered songs from: S/T 7”, The Only Solution… LP, split 7” with DISRUPT, split 7” with DEPRIVED, Ignorance is Bliss LP, and enhanced live footage you can view on your computer from the old days, and the reunion show. THE RESTARTS: Actively Seeking Work 1996-1998
THE RESTARTS are one of the best punk bands to come out of the UK in the last fifteen years. They have a pretty straightforward street punk sound (‘80’s UK hardcore, but also a little ska) and their lyrics are top-quality. This CD compiles their material released from 1996 to 1998: ‘Job Club’ Demo Tape (1996), ‘Frustration’ 7” (1996), ‘Just Gets Worse’ 7” (1997), and their side of the split LP with ZERO TOLERANCE (1998). Active Distribution has packed this one up in a sweet cardboard fold-out sleeve with images of all the releases that comprise this one, a complete lyric sheet, a double-sided fold-out poster, a comic done by a band member and photos of the band. This is how a collection was meant to be done. (2007? – Active Distribution – Active 9) |

THE RESTARTS: Outsider
This is the newest release by London street punk band THE RESTARTS and it’s some great material. Music continues on their tradition of catchy punk rock (with a little ska) that seems to appeal to everyone. Lyrics approach issues like war, violence, greed, religion, surveillance, etc… The title track is a catchy anthem about rejecting prejudice and conformity and embracing freedom of the individual in a society full of hatred based on appearances, beliefs, sexual preference, skin colour, etc… ‘They’re On To You’ is a driving, fast, punk tune about the curtailing of liberties by the state, and surveillance, with anti-terror as the justification. I could go on and on because all the songs on here are catchy, with great lyrics. (2008 – Rodent Popsicle Records – RPR 105) |

Lyrics about racism, complacency, and the US government's current project of world domination. Perfect for people who love both 25 TA LIFE and TRAGEDY.

THE STRANGER STEALS: The Goals of Misbehaviour
Musically, this band is reminiscent of British rock with some galloping beat thrown in a bit. If you are a fan of the Canadian rock band Styx, you will probably enjoy the vocal stylings of The Stranger Steals. Lyrics are quite "arty" but are a delicious compliment to the strange music.

TERMINALS: S/T
This is the long anticipated debut CD of Toronto's punk rock three-piece, TERMINALS. They played for a long time around Ontario before finally releasing this disc and even though it was painful to wait so long, they had the time to build a solid album-worth of songs for this CD. It's difficult to really compare this, but there are elements of STIFF LITTLE FINGERS and other UK punk classics, as well as US punk like RAMONES. All three members sing so there's a wide range of vocal sound. (2007 - Self-Released)

TRIOXIN 245: The Experiment
TRIOXIN 245 are from the Ottawa area and play political hardcore punk comparable to INEPSY, MOTORHEAD, and DISCHARGE. Their lyrics discuss animal liberation, identity, war, employment, conformity, and more. There are also songs that talk more about personal issues like in the songs ‘Control Freak’ and ‘Deal With It’. This is the type of punk release you can listen to over and over. It sounds good (recording wise), and the songs are pretty catchy.

WHAT THE SHIT?!: Fights Lions
WHAT THE SHIT?! are from Kingston and Nunavut apparently, and somehow seem to converge in Peterborough. They play a raucous style of punk with a mandolin, which makes them sound kinda like some SWINGIN' UTTERS at times, and a little bit of POGUES, as well as its own folk-punky beast. The lyrics are usually drunken stories that frequently mention love. Although the album starts a little slower, it quickly jumps into their up-beat songs. The song 'Wine Bottles' is rad, and really defines the sound I associate with them. (2007 - Self-Released)

ZEGOTA: Nemasté
This is the second album by ZEGOTA, delivering experimental hardcore. The first song starts with hand drumming and is eventually joined by feedback and then guitar, rising into itself gradually. There are several of these improvisational songs amidst the others that help to create a tone and mood on the release. The songs that seem less improvised are frequently slow, but intense, hardcore that seems to builds towards a climax. You definitely get the feeling that these are people making music for themselves to enjoy playing and creating, as much as for someone else to enjoy. Includes a cover of Neil Young’s anti-war classic, ‘Ohio’. Packaging is amazing, with a silk-screened cardboard sleeve, and a unique presentation of the lyrics. Artistically constructed. ZEGOTA are from North Carolina, USA, but have members from Europe as well. Their name was taken from a Polish organization that existed during World War Two that assisted Jews that were under Nazi threat. (2001 – Crimethinc Records) |

ZEGOTA: Reclaim!
ZEGOTA are a strange entity. Their music is rooted in hardcore, but its influences are extremely eclectic. The first song makes me immediately think of FUGAZI, as well as ‘80’s California hardcore punk, and then quickly moves into something so much more experimental. The whole album works like this. There are a lot of surprises. Quiet parts, fast parts, intense, chaotic build-ups, piano, etc… Lyrics are thoughtful, poetic, anarchist, and are presented in a collection of loose papers included with the unique packaging. MURDER SQUAD / HULLUUS
A badass split of Toronto's MURDER SQUAD and Wisconsin's HULLUUS. MURDER SQUAD come with some of their best material as of yet. Heavy and metallic crustcore with a pretty good recording, plus a cover of Here Today by NAUSEA. HULLUUS plays some fast and crusty stuff and features Bob DESPITE and Rainy of THE POSERS. I didn't really know what to expect when I was getting this but I was pleasantly surprised. It's fucking sweet stuff.
