ABE FROMAN: S/T
15 songs of energetic punk rock with female/male vocals. Lyrics cover multiple subjects from a personal perspective. Sometimes reminds me of the Avengers and other early punk rock bands, but mostly it reminds me of Cometbus music projects like Astrid Oto partly because of the aesthetic. (2001 - Self-Released)

BLACKOUT: S/T
This is the debut release from Minneapolis, MN’s BLACKOUT. This has an undeniable MOTORHEAD influence and the rockin’ guitar (courtesy of The Gooch, formerly of the almighty ASSRASH) really gives this a unique sound in comparison to most DIY hc released in 2007. Lyrics are written to fit the style, maintaining a rebellious and at times humourous approach, but well-written. My favourite song on here is ‘Up the River’, an homage to Kurtz and ‘Apocalypse Now’. (2007 – Aborted Society Records – ABSOC 011)

CRIMINAL DAMAGE: S/T
Goddamn this is a good release. Named after a BLITZ song, this is their best comparison, with a similar style, but with really good lyrics, and definitely modern approach. Songs that really standout for me are 'The Power of Fools', 'World Is Not Enough', 'Tomorrow', and 'Anesthesia'. This is 100% top quality, highly endorsed punk rock. Paul Burdette (TRAGEDY, DEATHREAT, HIS HERO IS GONE, etc…) on guitar/vocals. (2007 - Feral Ward Records - YAN-032)

EXTINCTION OF MANKIND: The Nightmare Seconds
This is probably EXTINCTION OF MANKIND's best release to date. Metallic crust with lyrics that say something.(2004 - Profane Existence Records)

EXTINCTION OF MANKIND: Northern Scum LP
This record really rips and you get the feeling while listening to this that EOM is just as crucial as they ever were. This isn't quite as riff-laden as their last LP, but it's still pretty sweet. If you've never heard this band they have been playing the same style since their beginning in the early 1990's… metal crust influenced by the likes of DISCHARGE, ANTISECT, and AMEBIX, as well as a little metal like SLAYER. Lyrics don't really strike as hard as the last LP, but still worthwhile. (2007 - Profane Existence Records - EXIST 099)

GERM ATTAK: Ouroboros
The first full length LP from GERM ATTAK is their best material to date. The recording and mixing is great (everything seems to be at a perfect level). The music is simplistic, but executed compellingly. Lyrics are often short, direct bursts, attacking ills and championing freedom. GERM ATTAK from Ottawa, ON, Canada, plays raw, driving punk in the style of CHAOS UK and DISORDER. (2007 - Capitalicide Records - 02)

I ATTACK: S/T
This is intense up-beat 80’s style hardcore from Chicago, IL. Songs discuss social/political issues (current crackdown against freedom, USA attacking everyone, etc…) but with a sense of humour injected into them. Many of these songs stand out as sweet hardcore outbursts, but the I ATTACK anthem of the same name is particularly cool, “I ATTACK, I ATTACK, I ATTACK, I ATTACK, Taking it back!” Not to mention ‘Skate City Riot’ singing about fuckin’ it up skate-and-destroy style. Apparently there’s someone from LOS CRUDOS in this band too... (2004 - A Wrench in the Gears Records)

LEGION 666: Black Goat Armageddon
The new LEGION 666 record had a pretty solid reputation to live up to, since their last album was probably their best material thus far. Although the new album has a little bit more d-beat 'n' roll style (maybe like DISFEAR), it matches or even bests previous releases with the continuation of their legacy of evil sounding blackened crustcore. The third song has the slowest d-beat I've ever heard… it's really fucking badass. The recording on this is top notch. Comes on some pretty attractive red/black splatter vinyl, with lyric sheet and full colour poster. (2007 - Schizophrenic Records - #33)

MOUTH SEWN SHUT: Doomed Future Today LP
This record is fuckin badass. MOUTH SEWN SHUT take a heavy-ass hardcore sound and mix in the ska elements. It sometimes comes out reminiscent of later CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE but way heavier, and with a vocal delivery that reminds me of SICK OF IT ALL or something. The lyrics are top quality, all attacking the ills of the world. Favourite songs include 'When Is It Going To End' and 'Watch Out'. Apparently they share members with TOXIC NARCOTIC. Comes with a badass poster. (2007 - Profane Existence Records - EXIST 100)

NAKED AGGRESSION: March March Along LP
This was released in 1994 and it collects some pretty rad songs like ‘Your Nightmare, My Life’, ‘Under 18’, and ‘Lock Us Away’. NAKED AGGRESSION play aggressive, yet poppy, female-fronted punk rock, with top-notch anarchist/political lyrics. The only bummer with this record is that it doesn’t come with lyrics. You can go to their website and read them though at: www.nakedaggression.com (1994 – Broken Rekids – SKIP76)

PERSONKRETS 3:1: The Glorious Dead LP
Dark and hard, yet sometimes melodic, crust from Sweden (maybe a little WOLF BRIGADE-ish). Vocals are really gutteral and sing about death, war, plight of the Palestinian people, dead-end jobs, ecocide and more. The sleeve has some really dark, badass artwork, to go with the dark, badass music.(2006 – Fight/ Halvafabrikat/Blindead/Fight For Your Mind – FIGHT056/HALVLP022/DEAD007/FFYM029)

SEA OF DEPRIVATION: Catharsis in Disharmony
The cover has the same image as AMEBIX: Winter 7". Musically, it would be impossible to not compare this to DYSTOPIA. Music is grindy with a lot of slower parts and tempo changes with influences from BLACK SABBATH and black metal (keyboards at times). There are two vocalists: one with deep growls and one with tortured screams. Lyrics deal mostly with depression and personal tragedy. They do a pretty good cover of 'Domestic Prison' by DISRUPT. (2000 - Catchphraze Records)

SELFISH: Cause Pain
SELFISH (Finland) is total Japanese hardcore worship. Relentless, driving hardcore with rippin' leads (occasionally dual IRON MAIDEN-style) and vocals spitting weird lyrics like Ishiya of DEATH SIDE. Cover artwork by Sugi. (2004 - Feral Ward Records - YAN-008)

SEVERED HEAD OF STATE: Power Hazard
SEVERED HEAD OF STATE’s sound seems to change with every release, but always delivers some badass hardcore with great lyrics. ‘Power Hazard’ is their first release in a while that has a recording sound that kills me like their early stuff did. Jack Control’s vocals sound more badass than they ever have in SHOS. Tons of reverb, and deeper than ever. An unavoidable comparison on this one would be POISON IDEA, mostly in ‘Deaths Marionette’ and ‘Adversity’, combined with the style that has been developing on all their releases since the ‘No Love Lost’ EP. The lyrics on this focus on Jack’s personal relationship with death, most likely related to his brush with it a few years ago when he was stabbed in the chest outside a show by an asshole. The other recurring theme on here seems to be a warning of the future that seems to become more and more inevitable as power continues to be consolidated by rulers (this, the title of the record seems to point to) and they intensify their wars. I really dig this line from ‘Corpse of Hope’: “Peace is more than the lack of war/But we’ve buried the corpse of hope”. My favourites on this record are ‘Deaths Marionette’, ‘Adversity’, ‘Corpse of Hope’, ‘A Sacrament of the Sick’, and ‘This Final Scene’. (2007 – Havoc Records – HC 1235)

THE VICIOUS: Alienated
This band is from Sweden and they play undistorted, catchy, old-style punk. Lyrics on this LP are all in English and simplistic, yet intelligent, often conveying feelings of alienation (like the title), mistrust and antagonism towards society. There's not much else to say. If you're into the retro-punk/early hardcore thing you'd probably like this. (2006 - Feral Ward Records - YAN-039)

WARCOLLAPSE: Defy LP
This new record by Swedish crustcore legends WARCOLLAPSE is one of the heaviest I’ve heard of this genre, although I had to do some tweaking with the stereo to pull out the crushing bass and drums. WARCOLLAPSE put forth twelve songs about the atrocities of war, religious indoctrination, prescription drugs, the police, as well as a couple of songs extolling the virtues of smoking weed, and questioning the repression of this most versatile plant. This record was a long time coming. Enjoy the undeniable heaviness WARCOLLAPSE delivers. (2007 – Profane Existence Records – EXIST104)

WARCRY: Deprogram
D-beat hardcore punk from Portland, OR, with a strong MOTÖRHEAD influence in addition to the DISCHARGE. Lyrics are longer than the usual DIS-song though and topics range a little more outside of traditional boundaries. Songs about work, a bleak future due to biotechnology, and the repression of the state, as well as the horrors of war. Sweet record. (2006 - Feral Ward Records - YAN-036)

BESTHÖVEN/SKELETON 12"
BESTHÖVEN is a one-man band from Brazil playing "dis-beat crust horrorcore". I kinda feel like the guitar could be a little louder in the mix, but aside from that it's pretty decent. A lot of songs about the horrors of war, but also a song about the reaction of the Earth against its human parasites in the form of natural disasters. This song actually takes its cues from 'The More I See' by DISCHARGE, which is pretty cool. SKELETON are from Manitoba, and play crustcore with a sound on this recording most akin to DOOM. Lyrics are very short thought fragments that hint towards dark subjects. Includes a cover of 'Sick Pleasure' by CRUDE SS. (2006 - The Total End Records - 004)

CHA CHA CHA / THE GOOD GOOD
The Good Good play strange stuff. I don't know how to describe it. Female vocals, yelling, punk rock... Cha Cha Cha has keyboards and is comparable to... no one that comes to mind. Vocals remind me of the singer of the Weakerthans, and the music is different. (Harlan Records)

DOWN TO AGONY / FALL OF EFRAFA
DOWN TO AGONY are from Zaragoza, Spain, and play dark and melodic crust comparable to THE HOLY MOUNTAIN, HIS HERO IS GONE and TRAGEDY. They’re a good match up for FALL OF EFRAFA. Lyrics are kind of interesting… “I want to kill the logic that mechanizes feelings” is one line in the first song. The second song is about the abuse of time… “Thus sounds death when you are not your time’s owner”. FALL OF EFRAFA are from the UK, playing the heavy and melodic sound, but their sound is exceptionally dark and sombre, possibly due to their talent for slow, emotive parts. They play one epic song called ‘No Longer Human’, which is about rejecting humanity for the terrible things we do to non-human animals. A line in this song that really affects me is “In these eyes, sentience is rife/ A cry, a smile – emotion we deny”, speaking about the human logic that denies emotion in animals, which is used to justify our terrible treatment of them. I remember a college psychology class discussing vivisection with the professor. He explained the logic is basically by saying animals emotionally express the experience of pain, we are merely projecting human qualities onto them. As such we have no way of proving that the shrieks expelled by a monkey during animal testing are due to any discomfort they may be experiencing at the hands of the vivisector (a theory I aggressively disagree with). This is FALL OF EFRAFA’s second release. (2007 – Alerta Antifascista Records – AA43)

PHOBIA / RESIST AND EXIST
PHOBIA are one of the most well-known US grindcore bands, and on top of that they have an anarchist philosophy at their base. Brutal grind with lyrics about destroying the system, the corruption bred from power, violence, and drug addiction. RESIST AND EXIST provide some of their best material I’ve heard, keeping the flame of anarcho punk burning. These songs have a really heavy edge to their fast parts, as well as classic quiet bits like AMEBIX or AXEGRINDER. The lyrics are great, as usual. ‘Insurrectionist Deed’ points out positive and negative aspects of the anarcho punk movement and encourages more of the positive and efforts to deal with the negative. ‘Sung Lee’s Reflection’ is a touching song about Jang’s father, and ‘Apocalyptic Prison Struggle’ is a song for political prisoners, and a reminder to communities to support these people who have been incarcerated in the struggle against oppression. I really can’t believe I’ve waited so long to hear this record. (2002 – Profane Existence Records – EXIST059)
