Chacma Baboon
snail
Shoulder height: 80cm
Mass: males 30kg / females 18kg
Gestation: 6 to 7 months - usually a single young
Life span: About 12 years

Large powerful with prominent dog-like muzzle and a very strong jaw. Canines exceed those of the lion in length.

Found in small or large troops. Very intelligent and acute eyesight and hearing. Often found in the company of antelope for additional alertness which supplements their own.

Sleeping sites include a large tree or ledges on mountain slopes. Noisy at dawn and dusk.

They have a well-developed social structure and when danger threatens, the dominant male adopt a hostile stance to protect the agile and swift troop, which will rapidly disperse while the flanking members stand up in the grass or jump on to anthills or tree trunks to keep you in view.

Their enemies are leopard and man.

Their diet consists of: fruits, leaves, roots, bulbs, tubers and scorpions of which they are most adept at removing the sting from the tail. They will eat virtually anything as well as young mammals and do crop raiding too.
