Ask Me Why
A Straw G-a-r-a-g-e-?Yes! A house would require to much permit work and planning at the moment. We are starting with a garage because it will go up quick. Code requirements are not as strict to cover cars as it is to cover people. The goal is to start small, learn, and grow.
I Still HAve To Ask WhySure. It is because straw is a viable and exciting building material that has many benefits. We are in an area with an abundance of straw. Getting people aware of the numerous benefits is one of the aims of this behavior.
What Benefits?Great insulation, sustainable, eco friendly, cheaper to build and unskilled laborers can build (with minimal skilled help). There are many resources on the net concerning Straw Bale construction. I have compiled a little list here. If that does not interest you, and conventional houses out of sticks (note politicially incorrect term) does, then go here or here.
This is Not For EveryoneCorrect. So Who Is It ForIt is for people who want to use their own hands to build their own home. Men, women and children, skilled and unskilled can all participate. There is a real feeling of accomplishment in seeing the rapid progress that can be made in building your own home. After all, we are working with a lot of lego-like straw. This is for people who want an eco friendly home. With "Nebraska Style" or load bearing straw walls, one can cut back significantly on using wood. With insulation ratings from R40, it is a lot warmer than the average home of R12-R20, and for some homes a LOT less! CoolReally truly in the summer! People that I have talked to by far and away have been quite excited and expressed interest in helping build this thing. Even to come and just see it they were interested in.
