The actual score was Florida State 59, Maryland 17.

It wasn't an easy week to be playing the Prediction Derby. Up front, Travis Vaughan took the victory with a difference of 1.41, the second closest pick of the season. After that, John Ryan and the "Nole Animal" finished in a tie for the runner-up spot. There were lots of ties; over half the people entered finished tied for some slot. This is what happens when you have so many close picks. Now, if you just relax and predict something a comfortable 18.38 points away from the actual score, you don't have to worry about ties; you can have 33rd place all to yourself.

Next week is the Jihad. Good vs Evil. A chance at payback for lobbying that kept Florida State a women's school from 1905-1947, for lame attempts at preventing formation of a Florida State athletic program in 1947, for refusing to play Florida State until forced to do so by legislative threats in the late 1950's, for refusing to play the Seminoles in Doak Campbell Stadium until the early 1960's, for all those losses in the 1960's and 1970's, for lying about when their school was founded so they can claim to be the oldest in the state, and for being a goofy agricultural college with really ugly school colors.

Yes, it's time for Florida State at Florida. Dare you make a prediction as to the score of this highly emotional game, this bitter intrastate rivalry, this war? If so, e-mail it post-haste to:

Put something like "FSU @ UF" in the subject line so I know it's not another damn chain letter. Feel free to be creative. Don't feel obligated to use profanity. Kick off is coming up fast, so enter soon. Don't wait till you're thawing out the turkey.

While you're waiting for hostilities to break out, check out Chris Schmitt's Prediction Derby page on the WWWeb at:

It's got lots of good stuff like results of past weeks' Prediction Derbies, and...well, what else were you looking for, anyway?
