When the NHL decided in 1989 to return to the Bay Area, it chose San Jose as the home for it's newest team - the Sharks. Playing for two years (starting in 1991) in the Cow Palace in Daly City while the San Jose Arena was under construction, the Sharks built a loyal following that followed them to San Jose when its arena was finished in 1993. The Sharks rewarded its loyal fans by making the playoffs and eliminating the heavily-favored Detroit Red Wings in seven games. The Sharks then followed by taking the Toronto Maple Leafs to seven games before ending its miraculous playoff run.

The San Jose Sharks represents the National Hockey League in the Bay Area. The team is the second NHL team to call the Bay Area home, the first being the California Golden Seals. The Seals played in the Oakland Colisium Arena throughout the 1960's and early 1970's before moving to Cleveland and folding.

The team's general manager is Dean Lombardi, who shared the position's duties for several years before becoming the sole person in the position. The Sharks are currently coached by former Chicago all-star Darryl Sutter.

1
