When the 49ers began in the All-America Football Conference in 1946, little did anyone know that the team would eventually become one of the most successful football teams in history. The 49ers and the Cleveland Browns would battle it out for the AAFC championship for the four years of the league's existence before moving with the Browns to the NFL in 1950. Over the years, the team would provide great moments with great players, but would finally win the first of their five Super Bowls in 1981.
The San Francisco 49ers is one of two teams that represent the National Football League in the Bay Area (along with the Oakland Raiders). The team has developed a rich history of great players and great moments, not the least of which was bringing home five Super Bowl trophies - the 49ers are currently one of only two NFL teams to ever accomplish that feat.
The team's president is Bill Walsh, who coached the 49ers to their first three Super Bowl victories. The team is currently coached by Steve Mariucci, formerly the head coach of the Cal Berkeley football team.
