While in San Francisco, the Giants played in the World Series twice - although they lost both, each one was memorable. In 1962, the Giants took the New York Yankees to seven games before yielding the championship. In 1989, the Giants fell behind two games to none in the series to the Oakland Athletics before the Loma Prieta Earthquake delayed the game for a week, when both teams half-heartedly returned to finish the series.
The San Francisco Giants is one of two teams that represent Major League Baseball in the Bay Area (along with the Oakland Athletics). The team followed its rich tradition in New York by creating a rich tradition in San Francisco. To date, the Giants have won the National League Western Division crown five times while in San Francisco - in 1962, 1971, 1987, 1989 and 1997.
The team's general manager is Brian Sabean, who after several years with the team succeeded Bob Quinn in the role. The teams manager is Dusty Baker, who was the batting coach for several years before getting the manager's job in 1993.
