GENERAL COMPETENCIES OF POLYTECHNIC PASSOUTS

1.       Problem solving skills:

o        identify problems in the work places

o        break down a real life problem into various modules (sub-problems)

o        transform each of the above module to the nearest possible abstract model to solve the problem

o        develop creative teams to solve the problems in the work places by inviting views from all concerned

o        develop attitude to work as a member of the team

o        identify role of each member in a team, individual responsibility and authority

o        appreciate the team spirit and provide positive feedback on the performance of the team members

o        evaluate various proposed solutions and select the most feasible solution for implementation

o        provide leadership for developing projects and their implementation

o        identify the sources of information related to a problem.

2.       Maintenance skills:

o        collect information related to equipment /machines/tools form reliable sources

o        develop knowledge of norms and standards

o        systematically maintain the equipment/machineries/tools and plants

o        trouble shoot common problems in equipment during working

o        operate as per the prescribed standards and processes

o        attend to breakdowns in equipment/machineries/tools which are used in the worksites/projects/shop-floors

o        conduct power auditing.

3.       Entrepreneurial and managerial skills:

o        assess the potential of entrepreneurship in various industrial activities

o        assess strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats

o        evaluate the decisions and project implementation strategies

o        analyze the risks and take appropriate decisions to take up ventures

o        develop understanding of rules and procedures for starting a commercial venture

o        develop checklist and flow diagram for setting up a commercial venture

o        apply for licences from appropriate government department for starting a commercial venture

o        protect the intellectual properties through trademark registrations or patents

o        estimate and optimize the project cost, sources of funds, rate of interest, and return on investment

o        prepare balance sheet

o        manage the labour, resources and information related to market trend

o        utilize time effectively

o        conduct the business in an ethical way

o        market the services and products

o        assess social needs in selection of products

o        apply strategic management practices

o        comprehend bill of rights

o        comprehend the various to set up, operate and sustained micro- enterprises

o        be conversant with various escort services related to project promotion.

4.       Computer skills:

o        use office automation software for office works

o        use internet for communication

o        use www sites and search engines for information gathering

o        use appropriate branch specific software for design and drafting

o        use appropriate ready made packages in project management applications

o        use presentation software to present information in a seminar /meeting.

5.       Learning-to-learn skills:

o        update their job specific knowledge and skills to cope up with the explosion of arts, science, engineering and technology through planned training and development whenever offered by his employer

o        take initiative to select and undergo intellectual skills development programmes which are offered by various professional organizations, colleges and universities in India or abroad

o        utilize other open learning opportunities available through internet, journals, books, seminars, workshops, visits etc.

o        register for various professional programmes leading to post-diploma, degree, post-graduate degree and doctoral programmes wherever required

o        innovate new methods/procedures/processes

o        utilize new skills in the work and innovate products and services

o        adapt to changing environment

o        develop life-long learning attitude.

6.       Communication skills:

o        use appropriate spoken communication skill in work sites/fields/shop-floors to instruct subordinate staff and workers

o        explain and report to higher officer/management about the work

o        develop appropriate types of project reports, business letters, internal communication materials

o        explain various project highlights and communicate with audio-visual aids like charts, slides and transparencies

o        listen and understand to the instructions, spoken orders and speeches

o        use acceptable body language in work places/shop floors/fields

o        participate in group discussions, brainstorming sessions, seminars, business meets and small group problem solving activities

o        conduct sector-specific focused group discursions.

7.       Occupational Health and Safety:

o        reduce/minimize occupational health hazards in the operation and maintenance of various machineries in the shop-floor/work site/field

o        assure safety to various employees

o        enhance the safety compliance by the operators

o        monitor the safety practices by employees in the industry

o        apply first aid and impart artificial respiration

o        implement and maintain standard safety practices.

8.       Environmental Concerns:

          The technicians who pass out from the project polytechnics will:

o        be aware of environmental science and education

o        possess intellectual skills and attitudes towards maintenance of environmental standards

o        take initiatives to prevent the environmental degradation and reduce man-made pollution in and around work place

o        monitor the degree of environmental pollution

o        preserve eco-system in and around industries and project sites

o        develop scientific methods to control pollution

o        implement various production processes which will be within the prescribed limits of soil, air, water and noise pollution

o        enhance the quality of environment by adopting proven processes from time to time

o        comply with existing laws, legislations and statutes, rules and regulations of state and central governments in protecting environment

o        incorporate methods to reduce, recycle and reuse the materials wherever possible

o        posses knowledge of disposing industrial wastes

o        comprehend the basic issues related to environmental auditing (surveillance, monitoring and impact evaluation).

9.       Interpersonal skills:

o        maintain liaison with superior and the people outside organization

o        develop healthy relationship amongst colleagues and subordinates (cooperative skill)

o        develop attitude of commitment amongst subordinates

o        develop sprit of dignity of labour

o        develop attitude of work ethics, quality and productivity consciousness

o        maintain discipline in the work place.

10.     Drawing skills:

o        Read a drawing related to process/equipment/procedure

o        Prepare diagrams to represent a new process/procedure

o        Sketch working drawings to communicate with the associated groups.

11.     Sustainability of projects and role of stake-holders:

          The technicians who pass out from the polytechnics will be able to:

o        sensitize the user groups towards efforts required to ensure sustainability of the project

o        comprehend the role of government as facilitator rather than provider

o        analyse participatory approach for community- and user-based management

o        understand the basic issues related to sector reforms in project implementation and management.
