After the first important groups of white colonists had settled in the area and the
last Native American revolt had been crushed, the western parts of Michigan were
detached and organized as the US Territory of Wisconsin in 1836.
This territory at first covered all of the present-day states of Iowa, Minnesota
and Wisconsin and parts of the Dakotas. But already in 1838 its western part was
detached and organized into the new Territory of Iowa.
Wisconsin Territory now only covered the present-day state and Eastern Minnesota.

In 1848 tne eastern most populated part of Wisconsin Territory became a State of
the Union. (1)
(1) The remaining western lands formed an "Unorganized Territory" and became
part of the new Territory of Minnesota in 1849.
