The US Territory of Michigan was established in 1805 out of the eastern parts of
Indiana Territory.
Its area was later expanded by the inclusion of :
- some frontier parts of the new US State of Indiana (1816)
- the northern parts of the Territory of Illinois (Wisconsin and part of Minnesota)
transferred to Michigan when the southern part of Illinois became a State (1818)
- some unorganized areas, covering present-day Iowa and parts of the Dakotas and
of Minnesota (1834)
Most of these areas were however lost in 1836, when the US Territory of Wisconsin
was created.
In 1835 the population set up a state government, which was however not recognized
by the US government until 1837 when Michigan was admitted as a State of the Union.
