Catholicism was introduced in the future Netherlands Antilles as early as
1527, when Spanish priests erected a first church on Curaçao and the islands
afterwards became part of the surrounding Spanish jurisdictions (Coro until
1637, Caracas afterwards)
In 1715 the Benedenwindse Eilanden became a separate Apostolic Prefecture to
which the Bovenwindse Eilanden were formally added in 1827.
In 1842 the Prefecture became an Apostolic Vicariate.
