The Netherlands Antilles included two groups of islands :
- The Benedenwindse Eilanden (Leeward Islands) :
Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao
- The Bovenwindse Eilanden (Windward Islands) (1) :
Saba, Sint Eustachius and (the southern part of) Sint Maarten.
(1) As the namegiving is different in Dutch, the Netherlands Windward
Islands are located to the north, in the middle of the former British
Leeward Islands.
They all were - formally at least - Spanish possessions until conquered by
the Dutch in the course of the 17th century.
Afterwards they changed hands several times and only after 1815 was the Dutch
sovereignty no longer contested by France or the UK.
Each island group formed a separate dependency until 1848 and from 1828 to
1848 all islands were part of the Government General of the West Indies
which also included Netherlands Guyana/Suriname.
From 1848 to 1919 each island formed one administrative unit. In 1919 Saba,
Sint Eustachius and Sint Maarten were united into one administration.
Aruba was conquered by the Dutch in 1634.
