Hurricane Floyd struck eastern North Carolina with a hard blow in 1999. Already at the point of super-saturation, the ground could not hold the 20 inches of rain that some areas received. At some places, rivers reached well over 19 feet above flood stage. Whole towns were submerged, and only 2 months later would the government allow residents back in to make an attempt to put their lives, homes, and possessions back in order. Many lost their lives because there was no warning for the rapidly rising waters. In Kitty Hawk, we experienced a bit of storm surge, but escaped the deadly and damaging flood waters that areas west of us experienced. The photos below are taken around Kitty Hawk Pier in the beginning stages of Floyd and our neighborhood during the storm surge. Nothing like wading in chest deep water to take some pics!
