THE OUTER BANKS
OF
NORTH CAROLINA

The waters off the Outer Banks(OBX) are often referred to as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic". Hence the name, "Chasers of the Graveyard".

The currents offshore of the OBX have been the cause of many shipwrecks. There are over 400 shipwrecks in the waters off the coast.

Pirates have also added a great number to the total. Pirates used to tie a lantern to a horse's neck and ride the horse up and down the beach. To the unfortunate mariner, this often looked like a beacon welcoming them towards shore. After running the ship aground, the pirates would loot it. Blackbeard made Edenton one of his home ports. And he was a generous pirate. Like the legend of "Robin Hood", Blackbeard, also known as Edward Teach, gave much of the loot back to the community. To the locals, Blackbeard was a hero.

During WWII, there were a good deal of ships(current estimates are over the 400 mark) that were torpedoed by German submarines. On Roanoke Island, "The Lost Colony" play had to be shut down due to a blackout during this period. Officials did not want lights shining to give the German Captains something to navigate by. Most people do not realize that the war was that close to home. But it was. A German sub was even captured just off the coast.

The Lighthouse
A lighthouse stands alone.
Its greatness towers over tormenting
waters and rocks of destructive power.
Its beacon shines through black night
to each oncoming vessel.
The Lord is the LIGHTHOUSE
in the lives of each Christian.
The life of the Christian travels like
the ship through waves of trials and
rocks of tribulations. The beacon of light
is the Word of God, directing each ship
to a worthier, safer place. Currents
from raging water tempt each ship to
turn away from the light and travel
recklessly through the blackness of night
towards ultimate destruction.
This temptation can only be overcome
by putting complete faith in the Lord's
beacon, and allowing Him to be the
Captain of the Christian's soul.

The Lord is my Light, and my Salvation; whom shall I fear?... Psalm 27:1
This was sent to me by Missie. Like most of the stuff on this site;-)

The OBX is home to several lighthouses.
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is one of the most famous. After being destroyed during the Civil War, it was rebuilt. It is the tallest lighthouse on the East Coast. It is now in danger of falling into the ocean due to erosion of the beach. There are two options being considered for saving the lighthouse. Either moving it over ½ a mile(which also endangers it by damaging the structure during the move) or building barriers out into the ocean to reduce/eliminate the erosion. The locals are showing their support for building barriers. But the federal government does not want to allow it because those barriers will interfere with the marine life. Or so they say. UPDATE!!!!!July 18, 1999 The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse has been moved successfully. After being thoroughly inspected, the report is that there was no damage to the structure what so ever. Which is REALLY good news. While this was not the preferred method of saving the lighthouse for this individual, and the fact that it was safely moved without damage proves this individual wrong( I admit it, I was wrong. It's not an easy thing to admit, but a certain party, namely Manteo 86 will not allow me to claim otherwise.) I am happy to see that it is now safe.

Bodie(pronounced like "body") Island Lighthouse is located on Bodie Island, just south of Nags Head. Just across the road from the lighthouse is a shipwreck being preserved by the National Park Service.
