CACS Activities at the 213th ACS National Meeting in San Francisco

CACS had great meetings at the 213th ACS National Meeting in San
Francisco. Our Social Hour was held 5:00-6:30 PM, Tuesday, April 15, 1997
in the Ballroom of Holiday Inn Union Square, attended by more than 100
people. Former ACS President, Alan Nixon, and John Massingill, a member
of Committee on Committees, were also there. Dr. Massingill gave a short
speech asking our members to actively participate in ACS committees. ACS
is charted by Congress with more than 150,000 members. The Chinese
American group is the largest group of foreign-borned members of ACS.
However, we don't have any voice in 34 ACS committees. For current issues
under discussions, such as foreign student admission and immigration
policies/positions and post doctoral dues, that can affect our members, we
simply have no representatives in those committees or task groups to voice
our opinion. Hence, CACS urges our members to take active roles in the
ACS community where we have been receiving helps and convenience during
its national meetings.

The banquet dinner at the same night was attended by about 80 people.
Professor Robert Bau of University of Southern California gave a talk on
"Five-Coodinate Hydrogen". Our Board Chair, Professor Sunney Chan of
Caltech, presented a plaque to our Immediate Past President, Professor
Phoebe Dea of Occidental College, for her outstanding contributions to
CACS. At the end of dinner, a surprise celebration was given to Sunney
for his 60th birthday.

On Wednesday, 4/16, Sam Hsu and Nori Chu attended the ACS Council Meeting.
Among many important issues to be discussed, immigration issue was
mentioned but was not subjected to votes by the Councilors.

Note:
At every National Meeting, ACS has included CACS activities in its
program book. Please check on the program for our future gatherings at
the ACS National Meetings.
