CACS Joint Forum with ACS North Jersey Section and NY
Academy of Science Section
On November 24, 1997 CACS had a joint forum on "Your Career in Chemistry:
Creating Constants out of Change" with the ACS North Jersey Section's
Younger Chemists Committee and Metro Women Chemists Committee and with the
New York Academy of Science Section on Women in Science. The event was
held at the College of St. Elizabeth in Madison, New Jersey. Our Board
Chair, Dr. Norman Li, coming from Chicago was one of two keynote speakers.
Dr. Li gave a lively speech entitled "The Paradigm Shift in American
Industry". He related several entertaining stories discussing subjects as
varied as the decline of the Swiss watch industry to the invention of hair
spray to illustrate the outcome of missing paradigm shifts. As a chemical
professional today, one of the most important skills to possess is the
ability to adapt to constant change. Prior to Dr. Li's speech, Corine
Marasco, a manager in the Washington ACS Career Services Office, gave
another excellent talk about the current job market opportunities for
chemists and reviewed recent data from the ACS salary survey. She also
gave recommendations for career enhancement and urged us to make use of
the ACS Career Services group. they can be reached by calling
800-227-5558.
CACS has had a good history of working with ACS and AIChE to promote such
career awareness programs for minority and foreign born chemists and
chemical engineers. To maintain this relationship, it is important for us
to participate actively in these two organizations. Through this kind of
collaboration, we will increase our mutual understanding and have
opportunities to express our opinions and influence the activities and
decision making of these organizations.
