Dear Fellow members and Friends:
Happy Chinese New Year!
The Chinese-American Chemical Society has now entered its 16th year. With the support and dedication of members and friends, we have been able to develop a good reputation among American and Chinese-American professional organizations. Our mission is:
· to promote fellowship among Chinese-American chemists, chemical
engineers and those working in related professions.
· to enhance communication and professional interaction among members.
· to provide a forum for the discussion of issues of mutual interest and
concern.
· to create opportunities for members to share their professional
experiences and to participate in joint research and business
opportunities.
· to provide a network for mutual professional enhancement and career
development.
· to provide career counseling for young people who are interested in
science and engineering careers.
· to encourage scholarly achievement in chemistry and chemical
engineering, and to recognize those individuals who have made outstanding
contributions to chemical science and technology and to the service of the
chemical profession.
· to facilitate interaction between CACS and other scientific
organizations and communities.
Under the leadership of Board Chair, Sunney Chan, and the Immediate Past President, Phoebe Dea, we have established the CACS Scholarship Fund for future Chinese-American leaders in chemical science and technology and the CACS home site in World Wide Web, http://www.jhu.edu/~cacs. In addition to its semiannual gathering at ACS National Meetings, CACS also held its first national meeting at AIChE meeting in Chicago last Fall. Our four local chapters are also very active and continue to provide local members activities to enhance interaction. The Tristate chapter continued its joint effort with other Chinese-American chemical communities to hold the 3rd Chemical Conference on Chemical Science and Technology at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Some prominent scientists, such as Jerome Karle, 1985 Nobel Laureate, and Dr. Oysteryoung, Chemistry Director of the National Science Foundation, also attended the event.
Please renew your membership and invite your friends to join CACS. Updated information received before April 30, 1997, will be included in the 4th edition of CACS Direcotry, due out this summer. Our continued success will depend on your support and active involvement on both the local and national levels.
We look forward to hearing from you. Have a prosperous new year.
Sincerely yours,
Chang Samuel Hsu
President
