Geodes are formed in many different types of melts, so the outer shells are made of many different types of minerals. Some shells are extremely durable and have weathered out to the surface several times and are still intact. Others crumble while still in place where they were formed, allowing the "core" to be easily seen. The core is a casting of the area vacated by the transition of the needle silica into other polymorphs, but the core nearly always records the needle structure on its exterior.
There is nearly always a central sphere of smaller or larger size to form the "dimple" and "pimple" on each geode. The side plates are shaped rather like TV tubes.
