Most geodes are very durable and survive weathering out of their original matrix before being found, so when you buy one, or often even when you dig them on your own, you don't know what they were formed in.
This first photo is of thousands of geodes in "pitch stone" from the
Spencer Fire Opal Beds of Idaho. You can see the tiny spheres congregated on the flow lines.
The next photo is of a geode in obsidian from 1,000 yards north west of the Roosevelt Hot Springs Geothermal Power House located north east of Milford, Utah. If this material had cooled just a little faster, it would have been "Snowflake Obsidian" as is found just north of this location.
This slab has many small geodes in a quartz matrix.
