By the time this record was recorded, I had already played out at least twice. The first time was at Drips' Coffeehouse under the name "Numlock" with Gee on bass, me on keyboards and clarinet, and I pulled Josh in at the last minute because [at this moment in time] I couldn't sing and play at the same time. We played mostly my songs with three or four "improv" tunes throughout the set. The second show was also at Drips' but we needed a new name because we really weren't "Numlock" and we really weren't "Canned-Teen." Also at about this same time, I was employed by the fine folks at Emerson's Coffee & Tea Emporium, supplied by Torani. Torani had introduced these retro-styled ads that looked like old books... it's difficult to explain. Just go to their page and check it out. Anyway, we got these buttons at work [to push the new grapefruit flavor] featuring a space man and the phrase "Soda 2000." Since then we've always played as "Canned-Teen and the Soda 2000 All-Stars."
The A side of this record is part of a live show we played with Andy Hans and Tate Paulette and wtihout Gee, since he had moved away by then. I had just purchased an old 8-channel sound board that we plugged into Andy's stereo. The recording would've been great if I had known how to mix everything. One keyboard was awfully loud and ruined most of everything.
The B side is full of stuff I'd been working on over the summer. My Dad does a great beatnik version of Men at Work's "Land Down Under", and I wrote a rather repetitive blues piece for Julie Cline to sing after I told her I would. Also interesting to note are the three "techno-ish" songs I wrote, only one of them having any overdubbed parts.
