Weekly Game Review for the Week of 5-16-99:
Virtual Pool 64- N64

Virtual Pool 64 is a tough game to review. On one hand, you have me who would rather play the real thing rather than an electronic version of pool. Then on the other, I have to admit that VP64 DOES adequately represent the game of pool on a console gaming machine. However, unlike pool in real life, the opponents in VP64 are a little bit too good for the average player (like me). There are a few nice features, however. You can zoom the camera in extremely close with no loss of detail. There are multiple camera angles to choose from. You have a replay mode to watch all those awesome lucky shots you place! There is also an innovative "practice-a-cool-trick" mode. You choose from a rather extensive list of neat pool shark tricks and the game sets it up for you. All you have to do is hit the ball and watch as some pretty fancy ball work happens before your eyes. But, no matter how many cool features there may be, I could never shake the feeling of jumping into my car and heading over to the local pool hall rather than play the game on the N64. The graphics are pretty bad, the sound isn't anything to be too happy about, the control is very awkward, and the computer controlled opponents are too tough for the average player. If you really like pool, and don't mind practicing like crazy to get the angles and cue placements, then this game could be for you. However, I strongly recomend renting it first.
