Weekly Game Review for the Week of 5-2-99:
Mario Party- N64
Mario Party is exactly what the name makes it out to be: a party game. If you have three friends who like to play games, then this is the perfect game for you. However, make no mistake; as a single player game it is not as fun. The computer controlled opponents are pretty cheap when it comes to fairness, however, they can be set for higher and lower difficulties. When I played with every computer character set at EASY, i still never won. (I did come in second ONCE, though!)
The premis of the game, like most games dealing with Mario, is very very cutesy. Don't expect too much maturity when it comes to the storyline and dialogue!
The story goes like this: One day Mario, Luigi, Peach, DK, Yoshi, and Wario were all arguing over who was the best among them, a superstar. Toad, being the intellectual little fungi that he is, came up with the idea for all of the characters to compete in a board-game-like environment to determine who among them was the superstar. During the game, the characters all try to collect coins and stars and the occasional special item. After each turn, the 4 players compete in a variety of mini-games to try to win more coins. The mini-games consist of many different types including free-for-all, 2 vs 2, and 3 vs 1 teams.
Although the game is very childish in nature, many of the mini-games are quite difficult, requiring you to master the different controls and movements for each mini-game. Over-all, it all comes down to how many people are going to be playing. If you're by yourself, I wouldn't recommend it, but by all means try a rental. If you have a bunch of friends who won't mind playing a game with cutesy little stars, rainbows, and birthday cakes, and who appreciate a challenge, this game's for you!

The Board... lots of... stuff... Believe it or not, the mini-games are quite challenging.
