These creatures are ones with biological shapeshifting abilities to a point. Since Humans have one of the most gullible genetic makeups on the planet, these are usually one form of these creatures. Some are affected by moonlight, the seasons, or can change into these different forms on their own accord. Here are some known species of Werefolk.
Any species with no asterisk next to its name is based on traditional myth or folklore.
* These species have been created in books or movies etc or by people outside of Lan Mesinsure.
** These species were created for the Atlantis series by Lan Mesinsure staff.

Lycanthropes (Werewolves): Undoubtedly the most famed of the Werefolk, Werewolves were once held by folklore to be the spawn of Satan. Humans who sold their soul for an artifact known as Stubb's Girdle, which grants them strength, causes them to sprout fur and fangs, and it goes on like that. However, this claim is held to be untrue, and if it isn't, it has nothing to do with Lycanthropy. As far as some anthropologists can tell, original Werewolves were an ancient and sentient race of wolves who stood upright. Wounds inflicted by these creatures on humans would cause an infection, which in turn caused the wounded to become a werewolf. Today, for various reasons, Werewolves have survived. Some are extreme cases, in which the human will grow seven feet tall, covered in fur, hunched back, claws, et cetera, while others are as simple as sprouting some fur and fang. The extremity of their time of transformation varies, as well. Some go into it every full moon, others every half moon, and others every night, regardless. Werewolf packs now reside all over the world.

Felinthropes: Often confused with the Catwomen of Sor, Felinthropes are Werefolk of felines. They retain human form in daylight, but come sundown, they turn into half-cat hybrids. Different cases have been documented, some are lions, others tigers, cheetahs, jaguars, leopards, et cetera. This condition goes deeper than most Werefolk ones, as sometimes they will transform fully into the animal itself. Felinthropes retain some of the attributes in their human form, as well. These include excelled vision, especially in the dark, increased agility and better balance. Felinthrope prides live amongst humanity all over Europe and Asia, and a few are in North America.

Scorpion-Men: Not a very original name, granted, but the Greek philosophers could be very unoriginal people. Featured once or twice in Greek legend, these are a race of Werefolk which only affects the male gene only. This is not to say that venoms of Scorpion-Men are not without females, but only the males possess the shapeshifting capabilities. Scorpion-Men are affected by the seasons. During spring, they will grow venomous tails sprouting from their backs, increase in height and strength, and grow extra forearms with snapping claws. During fall, these characteristics will fade, sometimes by retracting or simply falling off. Venoms of Scorpion-Men live away from civilization as best they can, although a few have tried to live around humans when their conditions are in human form.

* Weregoyle: Although not as much a race as it is a condition, Weregoyles are different gargoyles who, instead of turning to stone at daybreak, become human (usually human, although known cases can include elves, nymphs, and a variety of other creatures as well). This condition is usually prompted by sorcery; spells placed on the gargoyle. It is very rarely hereditary, or genetically inherent in the creature. Sometimes this transformation can be prompted on command by the Weregoyle. The transformation usually magically heals wounds undertaken in the opposite form, thus to replace the stone rejuvenation process.

Ursanthropes: These are the werefolk of bears. Ursanthropes are, quite simply, human in daylight and turn into full sized bears at night. This is a disease, almost, although no ill effects have been documented (unless you consider turning into a bear to be ill), it can be transmitted by bites, wounds, and fluid exchange. Therefore Ursanthropes are not really a society, and they are scattered all over the world.

Nereids (Wet Ones): This entirely female race is an immortal one. Only fifty exist. Nereids are women on land, but after spending some time in water, they will sprout gills and fins and become people of the sea. Nereids do not age, and live amongst humans near water. Usually several Nereids will live in one shore-side town, and meet every now and then in the nearest body of water to converse. Nereids originated in Greece, created, according to their legend, when the first seas met the first rivers.

* Kenku (Bird-Men): The Kenku are a race of tribal werefolk who will sprout wings and beaks and other bird-related organs to migrate every year. Shortly after arriving, the Kenku will revert to their normal form, which is mostly human, save for a few feathers and bird-like eyes. However, some Kenku have been known to stay in bird form even when not migrating. These are named by the Kenku as "Eternals" and they are granted great respect and ceremony. For when in Kenku form, they possess greater sense accuaty, strength, stamina, and agility. The Kenku are somewhat territorial, and will defend their roosts from invaders should they find them a bother.

* Sapiathropes: These are creatures who are not human, but under certain circumstances (which vary), they will turn part human, or in extreme cases completely human. Sapiathropes retain their animal instincts and attributes when in that form. Sapiathropy is only found in mammalian subjects, and it is unknown how the condition is contracted. As a result of their sometimes hinderable intelligence and feral instincts, they can be very dangerous and untrustworthy. In many cases, however, they can be friendly and useful allies.

Serpenthropes: A very dangerous, very powerful race of Werefolk are the Serpenthropes. Originally set in motion by powerful spells cast, the condition is then carried on through genetic lineage. Serpenthropes are humans, and with great focus of will and aura, can transform into a dragon. This was most popular in China and Japan, as Dragons were considered incredibly good omens. Of course the Serpenthropes (usually) can change into only one kind of dragon, and these vary from place to place.
