A really long time ago, there were dinosaurs. Most of the dinosaurs were not smart. Because of that, they mostly stepped on the ancestors of modern birds and mammals. (Who were just anything they could fit under their feet.) When everything started evolving, the big, dumb dinosaurs evolved into dragons, and they looked pretty similar, because they were all big scary lizards, even though the dragons were smarter. But anyway, all the little mammals were still scared of the dragons, because of an inherited fear of dinosaurs, which they thought dragons were, because they looked alike. When we finally got smart enough to figure out that dinosaurs are all dead, and those big lizards were dragons, there were too many fake stories, and they had gone into hiding because all of us trying to kill them had scared them. A lot. Besides, there had been a few evil dragons, and occasionally, one would pop up somewhere, often enough to keep stories alive. But by now the evil ones are all dead, and the nice ones are using all their dragon smarts to keep out of our way.
