OYSTERHEAD CONCERT REVIEW

------------------------------------------------------

Jazz Fest: Oysterhead Weird Out Some, Win Over Most
Trio of Trey Anastasio, Les Claypool, Stewart Copeland was most sought-after show at festival.

Fri., May 5, 10:24 PM EDT

NEW ORLEANS - Equal parts Phish (Trey Anastasio on guitar), Primus (Les Claypool on bass) and The Police (Stewart Copeland on drums), Oysterhead played hard-rocking, groove-infected music Thursday night to a Saenger Theater crowd that didn't necessarily know what to make of it.

It was definitely the most sought-after show at Jazz Fest, with tickets reportedly being sold for four figures.

"I wish they didn't play so much head-banging stuff," said Marian McAll, 23, of Alexandria, Va., who had traveled to the Big Easy just to see this show. McAll wouldn't divulge how much she paid for her ticket.

On the other hand, "It was great to see Trey up onstage running, dancing and freaking out," Debbie Ben-David, 30, of Florida said. "I didn't come here to see a Phish show. With Phish he will jump up and down, but this just blew my mind. He rocks. This was huge. I gotta go and call my friends and give them the scoop."

From the stage, Claypool barked, "Who paid two thousand dollars to be in here? Not the most intelligent move, yes?"

Opening with the two-part "Oysterhead" suite, the group launched into a bombastic, power-trio blast, anchored by Claypool's fluid and pounding basslines. In the second half, the group fell into a Parliament-type funk groove, à la Primus.

Strutting around the stage doing funny dances and making amusing facial expressions, Claypool ruled the roost.

"I had never heard Primus," Andrew Datilla, 21, of Arizona said. "They are not my cup of tea, but I'll give them a chance."

The band, all in white pants and shirts, danced, jumped, rocked and otherwise utterly confused the mellow Phish fans.

"I wanted to get it; I just didn't," said Mark Statcio, who exited the club looking more stunned than stoned.

But Phish fans were sated with a new tune from Anastasio, "He Used to Be the Owner of the World," which he dedicated to Phish drummer Jon Fishman. Fishman ran onstage, took a quick bow and departed.

Clearly enjoying the aggressive musical setting and the opportunity to generate feedback, Anastasio led the band through covers including Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" and the Kinks' "All Day and All of the Night," while Claypool thrilled the packed room by morphing Primus' "Tommy the Cat" into the refrain from Phish's "Reba"

"Bag it, tag it, sell it to the butcher man's store," the bassist chanted in his trademark rapid-fire talking-singing combination. Claypool engaged the crowd with running commentary throughout the gig, saying at one point, "I can't believe that I'm f---ing playing with Stewart Copeland!"

Oysterhead played no Police material, but Copeland's polyrhythmic Caribbean approach and phenomenal cymbal work had Claypool and Anastasio beaming at each other.

So far, there is no word as to whether this combination of musicians will ever grace a stage or studio again.

"It was awesome. They rocked the house, and if these folks don't get it, then that's their loss," said an excited Sven Nordquist, a New Orleans bar manager. "Best show of Jazz Fest, hands down. I can't wait for tapes." (me too EK ;-)

And this being a Phish-connected show, there was indeed a section in the hall reserved for folks taping the show. Phish sound guru Paul Languidoc ran the sound, which was clear, loud and full.

The band returned for a double encore, delivering a twisted, screaming version of "House of the Rising Sun," with its appropriate "there is a house in New Orleans" opening line. The crowd clapped, stomped and howled so much that the theater shook.

Ignoring his rock-star status, Anastasio left the building after rocking for two hours and walked slowly up the street into the French Quarter, guitar on his back, to dig on Jazz Fest just like everyone else.

STING VERSUS KIM TURNER

----------------------------------------------

HOW STING COULD GET STUNG FOR POUNDS 20M

Axed ex-manager sues star

A ONE-TIME friend who was sacked by Sting after more than 20 years is suing the pop superstar...and the final cost could be up to pounds 20million.

Kim Turner, who started working for Sting when he was a struggling unknown, was a member of the star's management team entitled to an estimated six per cent of his earnings.

But their long-term friendship turned sour and Turner was dropped from the team. The singer's right-hand man Miles Copeland said: "Kim Turner's conduct over the years resulted in Sting deciding that he no longer wished him to be involved in his affairs."

Now Turner is demanding millions from the star's massive earnings. Sting's solo career alone is believed to have earned him pounds 90 million.

Turner, 43, is claiming that Copeland's management company Firstars has not paid him since he was sacked in 1997. He wants access to accounts relating to the singer, plus damages and interest.

His lawyers are also set to ask the court to make inquiries into Sting's possible future earnings.

A music industry source said: "If you take into account royalties and tours and everything else that Sting might earn, Kim could possibly be looking at pounds 20 million."

Turner was the sound engineer to Sting's group The Police when they toured America in 1978.

The trip was a major turning-point in their fortunes and Turner was credited with transforming the band's sound almost overnight.

As their lone roadie, he was responsible for looking after them - even driving their van on an early UK tour.

By the start of 1980 the group had reached No 1 and No 2 in Britain with Message In A Bottle and Can't Stand Losing You - and Turner was working as assistant manager. He remained in that role with Sting after The Police split up in 1984 and the singer embarked on his incredibly successful solo career.

A friend of Turner said: "Kim still cannot believe what has happened after two decades of close friendship. He has agonised over this but feels he has to go to court for what is rightly his.

"He has virtually grown up with Sting and was there in the very early days before The Police became big."

A music business executive said: "We can't believe it is all ending in court. To everybody who knows them, the names Kim Turner and Sting are synonymous."

In papers lodged with the High Court, Turner says that despite being dropped from the singer's affairs he has been available to work for Sting in accordance with his contract.

But Copeland claims that Turner breached his contract by failing to provide management services to Sting, and that the two men agreed verbally to end their arrangement in 1998.

Turner, who has a farm in Torquay, Devon, said: "I really don't want to talk about this. I believe in loyalty and I am very upset I have had to go to such lengths."
