School Shootings

Even though bringing a gun to school is illegal, many kids hide them in backpacks and lockers. There have been many, too many, times when the gun has killed or injured innocent students. What are the causes? What are the ways to stop school shootings? I'm sure you've heard of the shooting in Littleton, Colorado. Who's next? Just this month, a kid from my school was expelled for having a gun and threating to use it. Can it happen here, anywhere? Yes, it can!

A 15-year old in Springfield, Oregon student walked into his high school cafeteria and opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle. From Pearl, Miss., to Jonesboro, Ark., to Fayetteville, Tenn., to Littleton, Col., children have lost their lives to angry, upset gun-toting classmates.

Here are my thoughts, they may not be correct or even logical but they are mine, and mine alone. I think kids bring guns to school, and shoot people for many reasons. 1) students have a bd home life, and usually a voilent of abusive one. 2) they have peer pressure to bring guns to school. 3) violence on TV and other media has led them to think violence is ok. Or 4) they are sad and depressed and think murder is the end of problems, when the truth is, it's the beginning.

DSC [Don't Shoot Campaign] was created to prevent violence in schools, particularly gun related violence. During the 1997-1998 school year, there was a horrifying increase in the number of gun related incidents. In fact, I had never been aware of any school deaths or injuries due to gun violence. I knew they existed, but it was not so common.

But last year every time I turned on the evening news it seemed like there was another school shooting. It is terrifying when you yourself go to school, and walk through the halls every day wondering if someone is going to pull out a gun and open fire. It's not even gang related incidents either. It's one person opening fire on a group of innocent strangers in their school. Or even teachers. The purpose of this campaign is to:

1. prevent gun related crime at schools
2. provide a support system for those who have experienced these type of incidents at their school.
3. show everyone that this is a big deal and is something that needs to be dealt with. it simply cannot go on.
