LAKE LEGENDS OF THE WORLD

Art Collection by Sheila Barrera - Page Two

"The Lake Erie Monster, Way Out Past Buffalo..."
(acrylic on canvas, 16 by 20 inches, 1993)

Usually, when people think of what seeing a "Lake Monster" might be like, if they never have seen such a thing, they more often than not may think of story book creatures, or dragons and such folk tales, and so it seems like make believe, or a faery story, not reality. My first experiences with the subject were in a way like that, and so I tended to create images of the creatures in that light.
"Champy" Racing A Sailboat, Lake Champlain, NY
(watercolor, 8 by 10 inches, 1985)

When a legend does take a life of its own on, when townships use images of it as their mascot, when it finds its way into the local folk art, taking form in ice sculptures, parade floats and is seen upon store windows and peeking out from restaurant menus, one cannot ignore that even if science cannot prove the existence or extinction of the creature, it does live on in our hearts no matter what!

It has never been my intention with this series of artworks to prove or disprove the existence of the creatures, I leave that job to those more qualified than I, all of whom have inspired me greatly over the years!
