"KISSING WITHOUT MATTER" (watercolor, 5 x 8 inches)
This is one of my paintings, from the 100 or so that I've done that are inspired by the poem below, which I wrote in 1985 after an intensely spiritual experience. Often I have been asked what it was that inspired this poem; maybe one could best describe it as what might be written by someone while pondering what could have happened during the time after our Lord said, "Let there be light." but before the time of Adam and Eve, before the Garden ... other religions have described this maybe as "Chaos" and possibly scientists would think of it as a time before or even during the "Big Bang."
And now, the poem, for your thoughts:
WITHOUT MATTER
Was there ever a time
when there were no words to rhyme
and another's ideas could be here
without the aid of an ear?
Was there ever a place
where one needed no face
to know another
as you know your mother?
Was there ever a way
to do nothing but play
with color and light
and everything bright?
Some folks would say,
"This be madder than the mad hatter!"
I could argue that
consequences were without matter.
Others would complain,
"There'd have been nothing to do!"
Well at least, my friend,
you would always have been you.
