NEW YORK MUSINGS...
I suppose we have a love hate relationship
I love you so, from afar
but up close never began to show me
how we could really get along
especially without a car.
I met you at the old Met Opera
when I was only six
Carmen sang the most lovely aria
but trying to drive without a battery
it kind of left us in a fix.
Broadway was so much fun
riding piggyback, daddy's shoulders so big
listening and learning to bargain
for souvenirs at the "schlock shops"
was something tourists supposedly dig.
By the time I had graduated
living Off Broadway at one hundred and third
I almost got used to the subways
except the stench of the street bums
(Oh, I know, you call them "homeless" now)
was just really too absurd.
Brooklyn was another story
up six of them, in fact, right by Prospect Park
I felt almost at home nearby the stables
watching the paddle boats in the lake
but I didn't like walking home after dark.
So, I moved here to Joisey
found another nearby park with a lake
my yard has trees now, and my neighbors say "Hi."
And when I yearn for your bustling culture filled streets
momentarily I wonder if it was a mistake...
but then I recall all the noise
compared to how quiet it is here
and my decision again becomes solid
knowing the commuter trains are nearby
and I can still see you, when the sky is clear.
