The album starts off with a great Bond song by Sheryl Crow. She wrote and performed this one and it is truly a marvel of modern pop. Crow captures the essence of the essential type of song that every Bond film must have. K.D. Lang and Moby also turn out commendable performances with their two songs. Lang sings the theme song of the film which just so happens to be written by Mr. Arnold. The vocal performances on this release are great, but it is Arnold's score that is the real draw that makes the album worth your money. The finest track on the entire release just so happens to be the second. It is titled "White Knight" and it is completely outstanding. The bursts of the Bond theme are inventively used and Arnold's own theme is allowed to peek through during the most heroic moments.
Perhaps what I love the most about this score is how it will make David Arnold the star he has proved himself to be. INDEPENDENCE DAY showed us all that he could play hardball with the big boys, and TOMORROW NEVER DIES gives him his homerun. Thankfully, the divine thought to place all of his score in a central clump in the center is gratefully acknowledged. Putting Sheryl Crow's song in the middle would've thrown everything off. Also the packaging of this CD is very attractive and eye-pleasing. In closing, this is a massive effort by David Arnold that just may put his music on the list of Best Dramatic Score nominees. We can all hope this is so.
