The listener is immediately immersed in the grandiosity of the SUPERGIRL main theme. "Overture" is the initial track that introduces the heroically brassy anthem. Although vaguely similar to John Williams' theme to the original SUPERMAN in structure, Goldsmith's is slightly more complex and just as memorable. This first track also incorporates the other two themes which make creative appearances throughout the album. The second theme is tender in nature and is utilized during the quieter scenes of the film. You can almost sense the growing romance between Linda (Supergirl) and Ethan. Goldsmith is a master of the complex love theme. The third theme is the monster theme, which I will discuss now.
I must now warn you, the listener, about certain portions of the score. A significant portion of the last half is mostly taken up with intimidatingly dark music. The thing is, I mean this in a good way. Goldsmith has composed some of his most mesmerizing and thrilling music for SUPERGIRL. There are a few stand-out tracks here. "The Monster Tractor" is pure devilish action and it sends the adrenalin coursing through my veins. Some of the percussion used in this track is purely stunning. Another great track is "The Vortex/The End of Zaltar." Jerry Goldsmith has proven himself quite talented in his use of a human chorus in many of his works. Grumbling strings and some pulsating synth effects eventually give way to swirling voices and a charging brass section. I guarantee your jaw will drop in awe just at the sheer sound the National Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus produces.
In his grandest way possible, Goldsmith brings the score to a stirring conclusion with a reprise of the main theme. The music isn't the only amazing aspect of this album; it is the impressiveness of the entire release. The package is very colorful and attractive, and there is also a detailed description of every track by David Hirsch in the jacket. Bless Silva Screen Records America for placing nearly 78 minutes of music on this disc. The experience seems to go much faster than that. SUPERGIRL is one of Jerry Goldsmith's landmark scores and not even the largest chunk of kryptonite could stop it.
