No one composer has been designated to compose the scores to all of the STAR TREK movies. Many have contributed their efforts. These composers include: Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, Leonard Rosenmen, Dennis McCarthy, and Cliff Eidelman. Each score is different and good it their own way, but Eidelman's is the most lyrically and thematically reliable. There are two very memorable themes in THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY. One of them being the six note pattern theme that is present when the Klingon's Bird of Prey is present. The other one is the more heroic and driving main theme. The most lush instance of this comes as the Enterprise clears all of its moorings in track 3.
Towards the center of the disc, we get to experience the rich, ethnic music accompanying the scenes in the prison mine of "Rura Penthe." A wide assortment of percussion is utilized to describe the cold, harsh climate and fierce alien opposition. The track entitled "Escape from Rura Penthe" plays very much the same until the near end when Kirk and McCoy exit the magnetic shield. Perhaps the finest moment comes with the epic musical tapestry of the track entitled "The Battle for Peace." Just when you think the music can't get any better, it continually does. It is truly a classic action cue.
Finishing off this great score is the "Star Trek VI Suite." Eidelman seems to seamlessly meld every brilliant portion of this score into one corker of a track. STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY has everything a soundtrack collector looks for and a little more. Sadly, this is the most overlooked of all the STAR TREK movie scores, although, I can't see why this is. At any rate, if you can find this one, it is well worth your money. I found it new for a low price of under $10.00. Turn on the warp drive and experience this grand score.
