Music composed by

Mark Isham

Original Review

I was really quite anxious to buy this CD when I first heard the music while watching the film in the theatre. The main titles are pulsating and impressively arranged, but the score release of THE NET is somewhat of a minor let down. Mark Isham composed a good main theme, unfortunately, he doesn't use it very consistently throughout the score. It may appear in brief moments of dramatic interludes and at the very end, but that is about the extent of it. Don't get me wrong, the dramatic underscore portions are well written and effective, but a droning feeling begins to take over in some of the longer cuts.

Another thing that really bothers me about this release is the entire track situation. One part of the problem is how the tracks are named: Act I, Act II, Act III, and Act IV. This is quite annoying because, a song title is supposed to give a word or phrase to signify what part of the movie it is. Not here. Also, another little bother is the length of the tracks and the entire CD. Two of the tracks are quite lengthy (10-12 minutes), and the others are relatively short (3-4 minutes). As you can clearly see, this only adds up to a mere 29+ minutes. This staggering length has a good story behind it.

Varese Sarabande, the release label of THE NET, is notorious for releasing short soundtracks. THE NET doesn't stray from this reputation. It suffers from it. Simply put, there isn't enough music on this disc. In closing, if you really liked the music in the movie, this "portion" of the THE NET score is adequate enough to quench your thirst. The length will be the most outstanding reason why many will leave this one in the store; this is really too bad. Honestly, this is a good dramatic score. If it had only been longer, divided up the music into smaller tracks, and been released on a different label, THE NET might just have been a bigger winner.
