Continuing on what may be one of his most entertaining and productive scoring seasons in years, Goldsmith's talent truly shines here. Aside from the main theme, a smaller theme is used when the men are trekking through the woods and when they feebly attempt to build their campfires. The chilling part enters this score whenever the bear is stalking them. A rumbly, growly brass theme bullseyes the terror of the bear's relentless pursuit of the two men. It is truly disturbing yet enjoyable to listen to. Goldsmith at his terrifying best.
One thing that I must mention at this point is my feelings about the final track. Different. That is what my initial feeling was while sitting in the theater as the credits were rolling by. Goldsmith starts it off with a beautiful piano solo of the main theme. Everything is normal, right? About twenty seconds in, the classical piano is gradually intertwined with a jazzy kick of the main titles. Initially, this arrangement threw me off guard, but after a few listens, I have acutally become fond of it.
As you can see with my ratings of scores lately, it would seem as if I am handing out five stars left and right. This is not intentional. The fact is that there are a lot of great scores that have been released this year and they deserve top ratings. THE EDGE is in this group of elites. With it's high-flying main titles and horrifying stalking cues, it is one of the best soundtracks released this year. Let us all hope that Jerry Goldsmith continues his hot streak with next year's MULAN and SMALL SOLDIERS. With a release like THE EDGE under his belt, it doesn't look like we'll have to worry.
